I hope this doesn’t come across as a “you kids get off my lawn” rant but maybe it is. I don’t get Billie Eilish. I don’t understand anything that has to do with her. Why her? What specifically sets her apart from all the other surly 17 year olds in the world? How did she get famous? Why was she pushed so heavily so quickly? What is so great about her music? I’m obviously missing something and I’m obviously not her target demographic. There are other pop acts I can listen to that are tolerable to me. Taylor Swift for example. While she’s older, I get her and don’t mind some of her music. I actually prefer some of her earlier country songs to her later pop. But either way it’s something I can comprehend. But Billie Eilish may as well be from Tatooine for all I know.

I can't fucking stand Taylor Swift, but at least I can understand it. I can see what she's doing and think, 'Ok, shitty generic pop songs that use obnoxious common sayings for lyrics and are as bland and unimaginative as you can get and have as common and (to most) inoffensive a sound as there is.' If you were in a corporate board meeting trying to un-creatively engineer a hit pop song, you'd come up with Taylor Swift's catalogue. So I get it.
I also do not see what the Billy Eilish thing is. I'd like to think there's some real thoughtful artistry to it, but none of it has made much sense to me.
I heard a quote form her where she said something to the effect of, 'I love that I have such a variety of songs that someone who likes me could hate one song, and others that don't like me could find say 'that song is great' and have no idea that it was mine.'
I don't understand how she can think that. To my ear she just whispers and mumbles on top of over produced electronic tracks. I don't see how that can be mistaken with variety.
Honestly, I think it's mostly that she has a distinct hair style so people remember her.

Away and raffle yersens. Ya mustard trousers wearing old yins. Are those songs by her?

I don’t get all the hype surrounding her either, I find her music to be just like the rest of pop music - generic bland cardboard garbage. I really don’t know what sets her apart other than her look - her hairstyle and clothing style. All pop music is shit, it’s generic, formulaic crap with mind numbingly stupid lyrics and no unique sounds. I don’t see what makes Billie Eilish any different.

Before the Oscars the other night I was only vaguely aware of the name. She could have sat right in front of me at a Starbucks and I would have had no idea that she was somebody famous (well, in fact she couldn't, because I never go to Starbucks, but you get my point). I wouldn't be able to recognise any of her songs.
Now that I have seen and heard her, I don't like her. I thought her rendition of "Yesterday" at the Oscars was shit.

It's all promotion. The record companies decide who will be the next star and then overpromote them until the kiddies just HAVE to listen.
At least Taylor Swift looks good and has personality (I think). This girl just looks pouty. I thought that went out with Grunge.

I can explain it to yas, it's easy.
It's what the kids like, plain and simple. And, they don't give a fuck if you like it or not.
Same as it's ever been. It's the same way as when you or I were young and it'll be the same 100 years from now.
I went to a Jr. Varsity girls basketball game the other day and the gym had a kick ass sound system booming some kind of hip hop. Half the girls on both teams knew the song by heart and were dancing along while doing their lay up drills. I didn't have a clue about who the artist was and had never heard the song before. I thought I was up on most of the new stuff too. That put me in my place.
This is just one artist young people like. She sells in the millions and just won 5 Grammys.
Billie Eilish - Bad Guy

Nope, don't get her. Didn't like her SNL performances and the In Memoriam tribute was just weird.

How did she even get a shot, was she on YouTube or does she have famous parents? I guess I’m looking for her origin story because I have no clue how she happened.

Because she's hot? Oh wait, that's Madison Beer.
I was going to mention het performance at the Oscars, but that's already had plenty of air time in this thread. Never heard any of her music.

How did David Bowie get started? Was it because he would wear a dress? Did he have famous parents? Or, was it because how Space Oddity sounded in 1972?

I'm pretty sure she was born the way that Justin Bieber was, via social media. Tween shit rock that for whatever reason takes hold. There is a genre of mumbling female singer-songwriters out there that I just don't get. It is so monumentally boring . . . and I'm not somebody who doesn't listen to new music anymore. There are artists like Big Thief, Julia Jacklin, Brittany Howard, The Coathangers, Lizzo, Lucy Dacus, Ages and Ages, etc who have female singers who are good and/or fun. That's not Billie Eilish.
