Haha, I only just saw that the picture for The Godfather was Trump for some reason . I checked the link of the image and it really used to be a link to The Godfather, but they probably changed it sometime since the last update. That's one hilarious coincidence, I changed it now. I'm sorry I haven't updated the top 50 in a while. I'll try to do it later this month/July since I still have a lot of data to process and a lot of university stuff going on.

I worked on catching up recently and I now did the entire period December 2018 - March 2019. I won't be able to work on it a lot next week, but I'll try to finish April 2019 - July 2019 soon afterwards so I can officially update the chart. After looking for different rating methods online, I've also decided that starting with the next update I'll be using a bayesian average instead of a pure average. Personally, the main complaint I always had with the chart rankings was that a movie with 11 votes and a 8.90 average would be ranked higher than a movie with 60 votes and a 8.85 average. It just doesn't seem fair. So to counteract that, the next update will use the 'IMDb-equation':
weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C where: R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating) v = number of votes for the movie = (votes) m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 50 C = the mean vote across the whole report
This makes sure that movies with more votes get a higher rating, but not by so much that the chart will be governed by so-so movies that just have a lot of votes. Like before, the number of votes required to be allowed on the top 50 will be 10 so 'm = 10'. The other values in the equation are easy enough to calculate. Maybe I'll also try to finally make a top list for the tv section, but I think I should focus on one thing at a time and first make sure that the movie chart is back on track.

It's been a long time, but the charts have finally been updated. Thanks for your patience. As mentioned in my previous post, the top 250 uses a bayesian average from now on, which better represents the popularity vs. rating balance and is used in most aggregators online (including the original IMDb top 250). Since the average for movies on this site is only 6.61, the bayesian average 'pulls' all the ratings towards that value. This means that the bayesian averages are siginificantly lower than the true averages. All the parameters used can be found in the spreadsheet so you can check the calculations if you want to. While the top 50 is solely ranked based on the bayesian averages, I also put the true averages in there, since we've been using them for so long that it might be easier to get a sense of how high the ratings are (and in case you prefer the original method). The spreadsheet also shows both the true and bayesian average for all movies. Here's a link to the spreadsheet. This spreadsheet also contains links to all polls and can be used to check if a poll for a movie is already present. Also, a few movies have more than one poll. In that case, only the poll linked in the spreadsheet counts towards the chart. We have surpassed the 17,000 votes mark and there are now 1,242 active polls to rate movies. An overview of the biggest changes to the list: Top 50
*We have a new #1. Jaws reached the top spot for the first time and Raiders surpasses The Godfather as well. The Godfather was at #1 for almost 17 months, a streak only briefly interrupted by its sequel. I want to note that Jaws & Raiders also surpassed The Godfather's true average. So no matter the method used, the top 3 is the same. *It's been a long time since the last update and there's a new ranking system. So a lot has changed. One of the more notable changes is that Aliens rises from #7 to #4. The Fellowship of the Ring & Empire re-enter the top 10 at #7 and #8 respectively. And there's one final new top 10 movie, Die Hard, which rises from #12 to #10. *Schindler's List shows one of the clearest drops in the chart, falling from #3 to #18. *The highest newcomer in the top 50 is Lawrence of Arabia at #21. *Return of the King also enters the top 50 for the first time at #27. The same goes for Blade Runner at #30 and Blade Runner 2049 at #34. This means that there are now 6 trilogies/franchises with 2 movies in the top 50: The Godfather, Alien, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Terminator and Blade Runner. Interestingly, the Jaws franchise has both the highest-rated movie of all-time (Jaws) and the lowest-rated movie of all-time (Jaws: The Revenge). Now that's range. *The highest ranking movie to fall out of the top 50 is Aguirre: The Wrath of God, with goes from #13 to #52. *Singin' in the Rain, Predator, The Big Lebowski, It's a Wonderful Life, Gladiator, Casino Royale, Pulp Fiction, Léon & Citizen Kane also (re-)enter the top 50. *Steven Spielberg & Ridley Scott both have 4 movies in the top 50 and are therefore the most represented directors at the top of the chart. Outside of the top 50 and other noteworthy developments*He might just have 1 movie in the top 50 (Dr. Strangelove), but Kubrick has a total of 5 movies outside of the top 50: The Shining (#52), Barry Lyndon (#78), Full Metal Jacket (#84), Paths of Glory (#116) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (#152). *Nashville, A Christmas Carol and Diabolique are the only movies in the top 250 with exactly 10 votes. The Martian has the most votes at 67 votes. *No movies from 2019 have made there way into the top 250 yet. With the decade almost over, here are the 37 movies from the 2010s in the top 250: #34. Blade Runner 2049 #60. Mad Max: Fury Road #67. Edge of Tomorrow #82. Sicario #93. The Avengers #101. Mission: Impossible - Fallout #103. The Avengers: Infinity War #119. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri #123. Arrival #129. The Revenant #139. Django Unchained #145. True Grit #149. Whiplash #150. The Conjuring #158. Wind River #160. Captain America: The Winter Soldier #161. Ex Machina #168. The Martian #170. The Grand Budapest Hotel #178. Boyhood #179. Cabin in the Woods #181. Inception #186. Wall-E #188. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation #198. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story #199. Baby Driver #201. Room #206. Nocturnal Animals #207. Her #209. The Social Network #218. Inside Out #219. The Witch #220. Prisoners #221. Interstellar #227. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse #232. Hugo #237. Down of the Planet of the Apes #247. Birdman

Trivial popcorn movies moving up, great films dropping. I also noticed that this update had more blockbusters up in the top 50 than before (which is, I think, what you mean). Of course this is partly due to the new system, which removes the unfair advantage movies with only a few votes had. But even with the old system, the only difference in the top 10 would've been Planet of the Apes instead of Empire. But the other things: Aliens rising, Fellowship & Die Hard in the top 10, Schindler's List dropping etc. also occur in the original system. So maybe it's also due to some kind of transition towards a more 'standard' or 'mainstream' top 50 as the top 50 movies get more and more votes. It has been more than 6 months since the last update before this one. Had I updated it monthly, the transition would've probably felt smoother.

Charts have been updated. The last update was about 2 months ago. I'll mention all the changes in the top 20 and jumps/drops by 3 or more spots inside the top 50. *The top 3 remains intact, even though The Godfather is getting ever closer to #2 (currently held by Raiders). *Psycho jumps from #13 to #8, becoming the only new movie in the top 10. It kicks 12 Angry Men out of the top 10. *Planet of the Apes falls from #11 to #13, while Jurassic Park jumps from #16 to #14. *The Terminator overtakes Schindler's List (#18 and #19). *Groundhog Day jumps from #31 to #26. *The Sound of Music benefits the most from the update and jumps from #38 to #27. Duck Soup also rises from #33 to #28. *The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Blade Runner 2049 both drop, to #31 (-4) and #33 (-3) respectively. *Predator gains 3 spots and is now at #32. *Pinocchio jumps from #44 to #40. *Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) jumps from #48 to #41. *Singin' in the Rain drops the most, from #26 to #44. Casino Royale and Dr. Strangelove fall 5 spots each, to #48 and #45 respectively. *Pulp Fiction also drops from #46 to #49. *There are 5 new entries in the top 50. They are King Kong at #42, E.T. at #43, Aguirre: The Wrath of God at #46, The Exorcist at #47 and Beauty and the Beast at #50. *This means 5 movies left the top 50. They are Léon: The Professional, Citizen Kane, Fargo, Sunset Boulevard and Spirited Away. *Psycho probably entered the top 10 because I rewatched it and left a post in the thread, causing more people to rate the movie as well. So, if there's a movie in the top 50 that hasn't had a post in a while, feel free to leave one with your rating so more people realize they can vote for it and we get a top 50 with more votes and a more complete consensus.

I can't believe time went by so fast, but it's already been about 2 and a half years since the first edition of the IMDb v2.0 Top 50. So, to celebrate, here's an overview of how the top 10 evolved throughout its existence (within the spoiler brackets). All dates are in the DD/MM/YYYY system. All top 10's are shown in a single line instead of below each other to save space. It's impossible to include all updates, but I'll try to include as many of the 'official' updates (in that the original post on the thread was updated). 27/03/2017: pre-release top 10 This thread officially started on the 25th of April, 2017. But I already made a test version of the chart in March. So here's the never before seen first pre-release top 10: 1. The Godfather, 2. The Dark Knight, 3. Alien, 4. Pulp Fiction, 5. Se7en, 6. Logan, 7. Batman, 8. The Martian, 9. Kong: Skull Island, 10. Children of Men
25/04/2017: official start of the thread & top 50 There were many updates in between 27/03 and this one (way too many to show). One of the most interesting developments was that From Russia With Love was at #4 at some point. Eventually, this became the first official top 10: 1. The Godfather, 2. Vertigo, 3. Terminator 2, 4. Jaws, 5. Spirited Away, 6. The Thing, 7. The Wizard of Oz, 8. Aliens, 9. The Sound of Music, 10. Stand By Me
26/04/2017 1. The Fellowship of the Ring, 2. The Godfather, 3. Vertigo, 4. Terminator 2, 5. Jaws, 6. Spirited Away, 7. The Thing, 8. The Wizard of Oz, 9. Aliens, 10. The Sound of Music
27/04/2017 1. A New Hope, 2. The Godfather, 3. Vertigo, 4. Jaws, 5. Terminator 2, 6. Spirited Away, 7. The Thing, 8. The Wizard of Oz, 9. The Sound of Music, 10. Aliens

01/05/2017 Shortly after, Empire took the #1 spot with a !9.6! average rating, the highest average any movie has ever had with more than 10 votes: 1. Empire, 2. The Godfather, 3. Jaws, 4. Terminator 2, 5. Spirited Away, 6. The Thing, 7. The Wizard of Oz, 8. Aliens, 9. A New Hope, 10. Stand By Me

I updated the chart. I'll mention all the changes in the top 20 and jumps/drops by 3 or more spots inside the top 50.
*The Empire Strikes Back gains 3 spots and can now be found at #6. *Alien and Back to the Future switch places and are now at #15 and #16 respectively. *The Terminator overtakes The Shawshank Redemption at #17. *Schindler's List falls from #19 to #23. *Se7en jumps from #23 to #20. *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest falls from #21 to #25. *The Sound of Music falls back from #27 to #39. Last update it jumped from #38 to #27 so in the end it's almost exactly back where it used to be. *Duck Soup also has a significant drop from #28 to #37. *Pulp Fiction catapults itself from #49 to #32, marking the biggest jump within the top 50 this update. *King Kong jumps from #42 to #38. *Pinocchi falls out of the top 50 from #38 to #62. *It's not the only movie to drop out of the top 50. Gladiator falls from #40 to #54. Furthermore, Beauty and the Beast falls from #50 to #52. *If 3 movies fall out of the top 50, 3 movies have to enter it as well. This is the case for Once Upon a Time In The West, which skyrockets from #118 to #41. The Shining also enjoys a pre-halloween uptick from #59 to #42. Finally, Marry Poppins is a complete newcomer in the chart (top 50 or top 250) and debuts at #48.

I see less and less people are doing it nowadays, but don't use quotation marks around movie titles in your thread titles. I know I kinda started that so I know it's my fault, but I recently found out that that's (part of) the reason why the search function doesn't always work as intended. Anyways, if you want to check if a movie is already included you can also use the spreadsheet on the 1st page, which has links to every single page.

IMDB TOP 50 UPDATE NOTES (10th of July, 2020)
February feels like a lifetime ago, but it's July now and here's the new update. Since the last update we passed 1,500 polls and 20,000 votes. I'll mention all the changes in the top 20 and jumps/drops by 3 or more spots inside the top 50.
*Raiders and The Godfather switch places and are now at #3 and #2, respectively. *12 Angry Men re-enters by the top 10 by jumping from #13 to #10. *Alien also gains a spot from #12 to #11. *If 2 movies go up, two others must go down. Both Die Hard and Planet of the Apes fall 2 spots and now sit at #12 and #13, respectively. *Se7en and The Terminator switch spots. Se7en's current position at #18 is the highest it has ever been.
*Singin' in the Rain makes the biggest jump in the top 50 this update and goes from #48 to #28. *On the other hand Stand By Me & Rear Window fall the most (of movies that remain in the top 50) and can now be found at #34 and #36. This is the second time in a row that Rear Window falls, going from almost cracking the top 20 to almost outside of the top 40 in only 2 updates. *Near the end of the top 50 The Exorcist jumps 3 spots to #44 and Aguirre: The Wrath of God goes from #50 to #46. *5 movies fall out of the top 50 this update: Once Upon a Time in the West (#51), Dr. Strangelove (#53), E.T. (#57), Memento (#69) and Kingdom of Heaven (#76). This is the first time Kingdom of Heaven is ever outside of the top 50 since its incredible debut in the top 10 and its eventual peak at #8. *These 5 movies are compensated by 5 new entries. 4 of these are re-entries: L.A. Confidential (#45), Duck Soup (#47), Citizen Kane (#48) and Gladiator (#50). *The 5th new entry, Pinocchio, is the only first-time entry in the top 50 and jumped from #67 to #49. It is now the highest rated animated movie, followed by Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Spirited Away.
*Other significant jumps outside the top 50 are: RoboCop from #161 to #131, Fantasia (debuts at #132) & Brazil (debuts at #174). *As a follow-up to the last update, 2001: A Space Odyssey continues to rise and went from #134 to #124. *And to follow-up on the other note from the last update: Parasite continues to rise and jumped from #151 to #137.
