IMDB TOP 50 UPDATE NOTES (11th of November, 2020)
It's been about 4 months since the last update and I finally had some spare time left, so here's an update. Since the last update we passed the 1,700 polls mark. I'll mention all the changes in the top 20 and jumps/drops by 3 or more spots inside the top 50.
*The top 3 has stayed the same this update.
*But below the top 3 a lot has changed. Firstly, The Wizard of Oz and Aliens switched places and are now at #4 and #5, respectively.
*Secondly, The Fellowship of the Ring jumped from #8 to #6, solidying its position as the highest ranking movie of the 21st century. Due to this Empire falls to #7.
*We have a new entry in the top 10. Terminator 2: Judgement Day jumps from #14 to #8 to enter the top 10 for the very first time.
*Due to this The Godfather: Part II and Pyscho fall to #9 and #10, respectively. 12 Angry Men falls even further from #10 to #13.
*Other small changes in the top 20 are Planet of the Apes (#13 -> #14), Back to the Future (#17 -> #18) and Se7en (#18 -> #19).
*Judgement Day isn't the only Terminator movie on the rise. The original also went from #19 to #17, its highest position to date.
*Similarly, Fellowship isn't the only Lord of the Rings movie that got a boost over the last few months. Return of the King rises from #27 to #23.
*Pulp Fiction, once not even in the top 100, continues to climb the chart and can now be found at #25, compared to #31 previously.
*All these rises means that something has to drop and one of these movies is The Thing, which goes from #24 to #27. Another one is Singin' in the Rain, which goes from #28 to #32.
*There are a lot of changes in the #30 - #40 range. Most notably, Predator falls from #29 to #36 and Stand By Me goes from #34 to #38.
*But on the other hand, Rear Window jumps 3 spots from #36 to #33, ending its streak of continuously dropping in the chart each update. Blade Runner even gains 4 positions and can now be found at #34.
*There are a total of 4 new entries in the top 50. The highest one, The Lion King, leaps from #67 to #35 to become the highest rated Disney animated movie on the chart.
*Not far behind, Ed Wood enters the top 50 at #40. Furthermore, Full Metal Jacket enters the list at #42. All of these are first time top 50 movies. Kubrick even almost has 3 movies in the top 50, but Dr. Strangelove is just outside of the list #52. The same goes for Hitchcock, but his 3rd highest ranking movie, North by Northwest, is stuck at #51.
*The fourth new entry is actually a re-entry: E.T. re-enters at #48 after being kicked out of the top 50 in the last update.
*All these new entries mean that a lot of movies fell down the list. Young Frankenstein went from #35 to #42, The Shining from #37 to #43, Bride of Frankenstein from #43 to #46 and Aguirre: The Wrath of God from #46 to #50.
*Four movies (re-)entering the top 50 also means that four movies left the top 50. These are Pinocchio (#53), It's A Wonderful Life (#54), Gladiator (#56) and L.A. Confidential (#61).
*As a final note, a few large jumps outside of the top 50: Pan's Labyrinth from #96 to #57, Taxi Driver from #94 to #62, Parasite from #137 to #82 and The Matrix from #123 to #110. Parasite's jump means it is now the 5th highest ranking movies of the 2010s. The full top 10 of the 2010s is shown below. 3 of the top 10 movies are directed by Denis Villeneuve.
1. Blade Runner 2049 (#31)
2. Mad Max: Fury Road (#63)
3. Edge of Tomorrow (#66)
4. The Avengers (#67)
5. Parasite (#82)
6. Sicario (#89)
7. Arrival (#102)
8. Avengers: Infinity War (#103)
9. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (#116)
10. The Cabin in the Woods (#148)
