Just about to finish watching Godard's Pierrot le Fou. Bit of a bag of shite to be honest.
Same director's Masculin, Feminin up next. I'm not expecting a classic!

Yeah, I liked it, but Seberg's French was excruciating to listen to - she had such a flat, uninterested voice. Le Weekend was OK I thought.

Game 4 of Stanley Cup final Montreal @ Philly edited down to fit an hour. Video quality was a little womky but the 3rd period is all good. Love seeing games I was too young to watch, even if the Habs win. Especially enjoy seeing players I know from their cards but never saw or vaguely remember seeing play.

Animal Kingdom
Season 2 Episode 7
I really don't like any of these people except for J and Pope is turning into a tragic figure who seems to have a good heart.
I hope they all die a slow painful death - especially Scott Speedman.

I watched "Sword of Doom" last night. Japanese samurai movie from 1966, directed by one Kihachi Okamoto. I don't think I was familiar with the name. www.imdb.com/title/tt0060277/Visually it is simply stunning. Gorgeous black and white photography and beautifully composed shots. I was in awe during a large portion of the two-hour runtime. It would definitely merit a 10 from me and a place high up in my list of favourite Japanese movies if it weren't for the difficulty I had following the story. Not that it is overly complicated, it's just that I often couldn't place some of the characters or tell who they were. At the risk of sounding racist, it is not uncommon for me to have a hard time telling some characters apart in Japanese or Korean movies. I am going to watch it again soon, with the commentary on. Aj_June, have you seen this one?

Aj_June , have you seen this one? Absolutely. I watched it around 2011-12. Tatsuya Nakadai is my favourite actor from Japan and I have loved him in his various roles as hero, villain or anti-hero. I thought Ryunosuke was exactly meant to played by him and none other. Complete coldness of his character and effortless violence in spite of being actually a passive character was depicted so brilliantly. I will rate Sword of Doom as my second favourite Tatsuya Nakadai character only behind his role in Harakiri. And in some aspects it was better than that too. The film itself is worthy of very high rating (I checked I gave it 9/10) so your 10 is no surprise. Not at all. In one Kurosawa's movie Kagemusha I was unable to tell any difference between Tsutomu Yamazaki and Tatsuya Nakadai. Hair Style and get up etc and the kind of face East Asians have may create difficult in recognising.

Ellen Barkin is pretty hot for an old old chick despite her jacked up nose.
Animal Kingdom Season 3 Ep 7.
Dennis Leary just makes everybody better by his presence alone.

I still enjoy it but I have to admit it was more fun when they were the outsiders looking to fight their way up, rather than a conglomerate which controls every aspect of life in Birmingham, from business to politics, both legal and illicit interests. I thought the Churchill angle was particularly clever at the end of season 2. They'd found a way to broader storytelling by having this rising criminal occasionally involved in political affairs, but they went too far in that direction by the time season 5 rolled around. The show has reached the point where the story is so convoluted and things seem to happen for the sake of it, rather than a logical conclusion based on any character's actions. All that said, I enjoy the (at this point increasingly cliched) overstylized cinematography as well as the performances of who I consider the two main leads, Murphy and McCrory, so much that I'll keep watching despite diminishing returns. It might not be what it once was, but I'm invested enough to stick with it.

Plowed through The Last Kingdom season 4 last week, finished it Saturday night. Not as great as season 3, but a decent watch. Their depiction of Edward the Elder this season in particular was disappointing to say the least, I feel like they did him a disservice compared to his sister. Hard to say if this was to build up the character of Æthelflæd, or if they just needed a poor leader to create more tension in the story. They featured Æthelstan prominently as a child, with heavy foreshadowing of his considerable skills and character as one of England's greatest (by my estimation its greatest, if you've seen my top ten English monarchs list) kings. Not sure it's been confirmed, but I'm looking forward to season 5.

Latest films streamed.
Couple of Godard's:
Masculin, Feminin: 6/10. Jean-Pierre Leaud is a weedy and annoying in this. I quite liked his main squeeze though:
Apparently sold 30 million records and I'd never heard of her!
She sounds a bit like France Gall.
Le Mepris (Contempt): 6/10. Meh, just confirming that I wasn't missing out by not having watched much Godard. There's less to him than meets the eye. BB looked cute though and Capri was nice. Jack Palance chewed the scenery.
La Grand Bouffe: 7/10. Four friends take a break in a large house in Paris and spend it eating huge amounts of the best cuisine. A satire of sorts I'm sure, but their behaviour did becoming annoyingly gross. Still, amusing in parts.

A Star is Born (1937) - the original starring Fredrick March and Janet Gaynor. Loved it - definitely the best of the four movies made with this story and title. Gaynor and March are terrific together and the supporting cast are all fantastic - especially Adoplhe Menjou and Lionel Stander. Sorry, Judy. You were a good woman, but you lose this time! As for Lady Gaga and Barbra Streisand - you can both fuck right off!

Ben Simmons - One and Done
Ben's journey in Australia to LSU - where he's staying 1 year at college before he declares for the draft.
Simmons has really shown a different side of him during this pandemic. Has done a lot of charity work around here and has stepped and and showed he has a big heart. Really makes you want to root for him to succeed.
Here's Simmons surprising his Mom with a dog for Mother's Day a couple of days ago
