What are your thoughts on plant based meats such as Beyond, Impossible and the like? With potential shortages upcoming of traditional meats, stores are carrying and promoting these alternatives. Have you tried any of these? Do you like the taste? I’ll say this - I have a terrible diet. I’m a pretty picky eater and I eat like an 8 year old boy. I can’t imagine that I’d like the taste of these especially knowing what they are. I don’t care how they season and spice it up.
And Ned, in case you read this, I am an animal lover but I also love to eat them. Barbaric, I know, but I am what I am.

I'm with you Frank, but I think we better get used to it.

Avoid the “chicken” at all cost. It is absolutely vile. The ground beef / minced beef / hamburger goes alright actually. Made into burgers, with grilled onions and ketchup + mustard they taste pretty good. Avoid vegan cheese though. I made nachos with it too, but I honestly prefer my vegetarian nachos with corn and black beans anyway. I had a friend make lasagne with it and he said it was pretty good too. Speaking of burgers - www.hungryjacks.com.au/better-food/rebel-whopper-100-whopper-0-beef These are very good actually. Taste identical to regular whoppers. The only drama is that I’m not really a fan of Hungry Jacks / Burger King in general, nor whoppers specifically.

I am pescetarian so no chicken, pork or beef for this guy. I'll eat the plant-based meats now and again but they're so heavily processed that it's not a regular thing. I do like the Impossible meat though and at my big July 4th pool bash that I hold every year (we'll see what this year holds), I always make Impossible burgers for me and my wife while I cook up ribs and everything else for my friends. They're pretty tasty.
Of all the fake stuff, I like jackfruit the best because you can load it up with BBQ sauce and it's terrific. Plus, it's not really fake, it's just fruit!
One thing we all need to get used to is insect protein, namely crickets. Americans tend to have a hard stop with that sort of thing, but it's so much cheaper to harvest and process, so much more packed with nutrients per ounce and is so much better for the environment than traditional meat farming that it's not a question of if, but simply when.

No, I am not a fan of vegan foods but the one they sell in Hungry Jacks in Australia tested incredibly well. They were only vegetarian burger I have ever liked. I do not remember if they were called veggie burger or vegan burger.

Valess is a company that sells meat-ersatz based on milk, and it tastes relatively good. From time to time I buy it. Overall I buy rather less meat but with a higher quality. Pauca set matura - less is more. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/ValessIt's only in Dutch, but one can use autotranslate. For those who master the German tongue: www.valess.de/

I don’t have a problem with veggie pattys and things like that. I like meat but it isn’t something I need, if you know what I mean.

I've never had any of the newer ones, but I'm a big fan of Quorn I don't eat pork (haven't for several years) but I do enjoy Quorn substitutes. In many cases, they taste the same or close enough.

I have never tried any. I don't see the point. If I want to eat vegetables (which I often do), I will just eat vegetables - no need to eat processed vegetables made to taste like meat.

They'll have to come down in price and become more authentic before I'd bite.

Aren't all these new things just 'veggie burgers,' 'veggie dogs,' etc.? Obviously meat is going to taste better but once they're spiced and you put condiments and other toppings on them I don't see why anyone can't accept their taste as acceptable.
One issue for people which I haven't seen mentioned is that I'm pretty sure at least some of these products have gluten. I also noticed I was gassy after eating the Wendy's(?) faux burger. Just me or a side effect with these products?
The Firkin chain pubs had delicious veggie burgers as were Licks Burgers.

I have to tell you, hard stop on the insect protein doesn’t really fully explain my thoughts on that. If I’m Tom Hanks drifting for days on that raft, i lost Wilson and I’m about to die, if that ship that rescues him only has cricket burgers or whatever, I’m jumping back into the ocean to wait for the next boat. No amount of ISIS torture will get me to willingly eat filet o’ murder hornets.

Haven't eaten meat in about 40 years, meat substitutes have moved on hugely. As mentioned above the Quorn stuff is very good. If anyone truly cares about animals then there is no good reason to eat meat these days.

I don't tend to use the fake meat stuff. If I want a burgery thing, or a pie, I generally get ones just made with vegetable chunks, chick peas, beans, rice, mushrooms, etc. Of the fake meat things I have tried, Birds Eye green cuisine pea protein burgers are good for barbecues, and very meat burgery. I have heard there are some absolutely amazing taste and texture plant based 'steaks' now on the market... I haven't tried them yet. Not overly inclined to. If any of these plant based fake meat products help other people transition away from meat eating (which seems to be happening), I'm all for them 👍

The best of them are just OK. When it comes to a veggie burger I'd prefer one that tastes like the vegetables that it's made of rather pretending to be meat. My parents are pescetarian (dad) and vegetarian (mom), and my dad is all about the fake meats. All kinds. Deli meats, fake bacon, fake burgers, fake chicken. Most of it is mediocre at best. But Beyond Sausages are actually pretty good. Those are probably the only ones you might be fooled into thinking are actually made with meat.
I keep an open mind with those things, but they don't appeal to me. I don't eat red meat that often anyway, so if I'm gonna have it I'd rather have the real thing. I think people generally probably eat too much meat, but I don't really believe in cutting it out entirely.
