I know its a common enough topic to bring up, and feel free to mention some oddball ones to spice it up...but im currently down a youtube hole that started with Westworld covers and now I find myself into horror movie themes...so here goes...
Fright Night....Look, if a vampire is gonna kill me Id HOPE they play something as relaxing and soothing as I find this song.
Assault on Precinct 13....In a reverse fashion, this one gets my heart going. Prob more of a suspenseful action movie than a horror so I might be cheating but I like this one a lot.
Sleepwalkers...The Fugees might've made this sound far more famous than the movie ever did...but it still is great.

I posted some favorites in the Best NON-ICONIC Horror Themes? thread, a while earlier, so I am almost ready to call it a day, and go to bed, but I am too lazy now to search around for more great horror themes, so I just re-post it here, and will try to get back tomorrow and think of some fresh "material" to bring along.
Jerry Goldsmith - Psycho II - Theme (1983)
(By the way, the main theme starts around 01:40) I guess this one could be considered both the main theme and also the end theme, but I really love this extended version, and there is something very sad and lonely about the melody and theme, and when you think about how tough it must have been to try and follow up one of the most famous movies and movie themes, I think Psycho 2 by Richard Franklin did one hell of a job at that, especially getting the right tone and atmosphere. That is very much down to the soundtrack, and for me this absolute beautiful and haunting piece of music by Jerry Goldsmith. Patrick Moraz - The Stepfather End Titles (1987)
I have actually forgotten the main theme, but I hope it is okay to also include the end titles, as I have always been fond of this moody and upbeat synth pop instrumental, that somehow was very difficult to find for a while, but someone have uploaded it as the end titles from the sequel. Anyway, for me it is just one of very many memorable 80s horror themes. Brain Damage (1988) - End titles (1988)
Maybe one of my absolute most loved end themes, as this dreamy and almost "hypnotic" piece of music, came out of "nowhere" when I first saw the film, and I become almost as addicted to it, as what Brian was to Aylmer's "juice" the first time I heard it. Still, beside having this calming and relaxing sounds to it, there is also a sadness in the music and melody, and again, when the saxophone comes in, I am completely "lost" and would have wished it would just go on for several minutes or more.

By the way, that Fright Night - Come To Me instrumental, that is a real gem, soothing, sensual and erotic but also with a hint of danger lurking behind it all. Damn, Brad Fiedel did some fine work back in those days, I love his stuff on The Terminator (1984), but Come To Me might even go beyond all that, and I really want that soundtrack on CD, if it contains most of the music used in the original movie that is. Speaking of sensual and stylish instrumentals, used with great effect in 80s vampire films, I guess I just had to post the stunning and dreamy sounds of Tangerine Dream and Mae's Theme from Near Dark (1987). It is one of those beautiful and haunting themes, that I just want to go out into the mysterious night, then lay me down on some car rooftop with the girl of my dreams, and just be complete and total silent, while holding her hands and looking at the stars and all that. Yeah, I think it is time to go to bed now, for sure.

By the way, the Sleepwalkers theme, I think is called Bodacia (or something similar) by Enya, a majestic piece of music, and one that made that movie much better than it really was, or so I remembered it, but it did not hurt either by having both Mädchen Amick and Alice Krige starring in also.
I think Enya pretty much "destroyed" The Fugees when they tried to get away with "borrowing" her music.

The Phantasm (1979) theme sure is eerie, and I just love how the film opens up with those chilling and unsettling sounds and even though the more upbeat 80s version in the sequel is not that far off, the original is hands down, one of the best horror themes ever made.

Speaking of unsettling horror themes, I have (yeah, I probably have already posted and written something similar several times over) to say that the cold, minimalistic "doomsday" synths that is the Main Titles from Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth, are surely among some of the most creepy and memorable horror scores I can think of.
It hit so hard with me, the first time I saw it, not knowing what to expect, but once those icy cold and dark brooding synths started appearing, I just knew I was in for something very special. I deciced to also include the more upbeat, almost "hypnotic" beats of the Chariots of Pumpkins, which is also another great theme from the film.

"Magic and Ecstasy" (Exorcist II: The Heretic) - Ennio Morricone
"New York One More Day" (New York Ripper) - Francesco de Masi
"New Year's Evil" (New Year's Evil) - Shadow

Perhaps the best part about the movie.

I absolutely love the soundtrack to Deep Red. Out of all the Dario Argento film scores this is my favorite, I even like it better than Suspiria.
One particular track I love is Deep Shadows...

That opening theme by Brad Fiedel really sets the tone and mood, as you mention, and I did re-watch it last year, for the first time in ages, and had almost "forgotten" how creepy and unsettling the opening score really was, and I wished it would last a bit longer. Along with The Creeper aka Rituals (1977), I think Just Before Dawn is one of the best "backwood-slashers" of the late 70s and early 80s, combining beautiful location and use of nature and sounds, along with very interesting gallery of people. Anyway, a great pick you have posted there lostinlimbo.

I absolutely love the soundtrack to Deep Red. Out of all the Dario Argento film scores this is my favorite, I even like it better than Suspiria. One particular track I love is Deep Shadows... Wow, that one was sure, something quite special, I guess is the right way of trying to describe it, but I sure dig it. Have not seen Deep Red for so long now, that most of the score kind of have gotten "lost" in my mind, but I do own a DVD where it has two different copies, so maybe some changes were being made also within the soundtrack that went with them? Yes, Argento always managed to pick out great music or composers who delivered very unusual or original pieces that made his movies so much more than just any other "ordinary" film at that time.

Here are a few of my other top favorites here also . Some true horror/thriller classic themes you have put in there, mszanadu thanks for sharing them with us. I highlighted those I think stands most close to me or my ears that is, and I am specially very fond of the Dickies, who made such a fun and catchy punk-rock themed tune for the great Killer Klowns from Outer Space movie. I actually think they also did a couple of other horror themes for some Troma titles during the late 80s and early 90s. Could it be one of the Toxic Avenger sequels? I have actually kind of forgotten, but it sounded a little bit like them musically. The vocal part of theme of Come To Me by Deborah Holland was kind of "weird", as I have always went for the instrumental one, but I got to say, she does it a very huge favor and it makes up for a beautiful song, which again, (thanks so much for putting up) I feel I should have played more attention to. However, I have yet to watch the Fright Night sequel, even though it is on Youtube (I believe) in great picture and sound quality, and since no official (or at least that of I know) Blu-ray or new upgraded DVD seems to hit the streets, I guess I have really no more "excuses" to continue on, "avoiding" it. I love the first film, and I really, really want the second one in my movie collection on DVD or Blu-ray, but well, I guess when it is around for free, I should not feel bad about checking it out. Darkest side of the Night by Metropolis is another one, I have always loved. Very 80s, power-rock feel-good vibe over it, and it just makes me want to re-watch the whole film, again and again. Friday The 13th Part III theme is also one of those that just grabs me from the very first go, I really need to check out all of the 80s Friday the 13th this summer, as I have somehow not done that, for far too long. It is such a "funky" a groovy theme, kind of reminds me a bit of the one I think was used in Return of the Living Dead (1985) as well. I almost forgot the last one, The Warriors theme, which is so full of energy and almost make you all "pumped" up, the way an opening theme really should do, specially if it is one as good as The Warriors.

most intriguing movie theme reminder here also . I am glad you enjoyed it, as there is something about its "simplicity" or minimalistic approach, that I think makes it so much more, scary, instead of going waaaay overboard with too much of "everything".
