Just started it. So far it's just about how loony Dizzy Dean was
sounds like it was written for me. I'm only two chapters in. So far it a Dean bio. i do hope they talk about the rest of the 1934 Cardinals sometime.
I'm trying to figure out who was nuttier, Dean or Rube Waddell. Tossup.

I mean Waddell may've had one or more learning disabilities, his behavior could be grounded by the premise he was misunderstood, as for Dean he legitimately just seemed like a bit of a daredevil who dared to get an injury.

Both were massively under educated. quite common in the day. Dizzy Dean was a self promoter. He came into training camp in 1931 wearing a shirt with "Dean the Great" on it. Stolen form Art Shires, a real loony. He was mildly eccentric, came to a hotel with two huge suitcases, containing one pack of cigarettes. But most of his routine was to get into the papers. And he was supremely self confident. Damn shame he had such a short career. Waddell, on the other hand, was just a big kid. His antics entertained the fans and his teammates so he acted up. My first wife was born in the same town as Waddell and that is a strange burg. And I always wondered how many stories about Waddell and Dean were made up or embellished.

got an argument going with my dad over Hornsby. Hornsby wasnโt a character, he was as asshole my dad was all like yeah but that was a different time and era as if its an excuse.... You can acknowledge the whole attitude was problematic as well as Hornsby as a person and still enjoy reading about the dude. It feels like a weird justification.

The last sports book I read was โSevens Heaven: The Beautiful Chaos of Fijiโs Olympic Dreamโ, by Ben Ryan, an Englishman who was hired to coach Fijiโs national Rugby Sevens team in preparation for the Rio Olympics. Very good read โ and I am not even all that interested in Rugby!

So far itโs really entertaining. And I havenโt even got to Trump yet
