One of my favorite sport books For many years I had a first edition copy of this book autographed by Sparky himself........my mom did the hair of a woman here in the Milwaukee area that he "dated" (back in the day when the Brewers were still in the American League), and she gave me the copy he had inscribed to her, after they stopped seeing each other. Sadly though, that book was lost (and more than likely, thrown out with a TON of other things) a few years ago when my siblings and I cleaned out my parent's house in preparation for selling it, after their passing..... SAVE FERRIS

I saw this on bookshelves last month.Β I wish the idea of the numbers not being literal ranking was more prominent, as the author's intent.Β I browsed the Barry Bonds chapter, & liked the approach - why he's great, why he shouldn't be, etc or whatever. I think I want to be further away from the steroid era to be honest before I invest in another baseball book of that ilk.Β Β To that point, I've the SI books of Baseball, Hockey, Golf, Basketball, & Football... & they're all from around 2005... now already 15+ years past... I love their legacies/almanac/stories/photos appeal, & yet they're becoming relics.Β I'll always keep them, they're excellent... maybe 2030 I'll dive into newer ilk.Β I did look at the NFL 100, NHL 100, NBA 75 official books & they're all quite underwhelming. Cool. Iβm about to start reading it.

SAVE FERRIS Would like to see someone adopt this book into a movie. What a crazy year for the 1978 Yankees. What a fun year for a Red Sox fan. I remember waking up every morning, grabbing the paper, checking the AL East standings, and seeing that "GB" number getting smaller and smaller. I invented a whole bunch of curse words that few 15 year old kids could have dreamed of.

I love Halberstam's baseball books. His in depth chapters about Bob Gibson and especially Mickey Mantle are great. He sums up Mantle as well as any author and I've read a shitload of stuff about the Mick.

Now reading a political book "The Brilliant Boy" written by sports journalist Gideon Haigh. Very interesting look at Doc Evatt, a High Court Justice who would go on to be Australia's Attorney-General during the war years, before ascending to the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 (only Australian to hold the position). He then became leader of the Australian Labor Party and, in 1954, became the first man to win a majority of the popular vote at an election and not form government.
Framing Evatt's career around a lengthy dissent he wrote in a civil case by Golda Chester who had lost her son after a Sydney council had left a flooded roadwork unguarded in 1937, Haigh captures the legal and political climate of the time to show the kind of society Evatt was reacting against and the character of the man himself. Good read and not too lengthy at 357 pages.

Now reading "Doing Politics: Writing on Public Life" by Judith Brett. Don't normally read political books by unapologetic left wing public intellectuals (which is exactly why I should read it of course). So far, so interesting.

But I do remember Joe's list of the 60 Greatest Moments in Baseball History. Suffice it to say that I'm not sure if I trust one of his lists after that mess. #2 was Duane Kuiper's one career HR. #5 was Geena Davis dropping the ball at the end of A League of Their Own.
Did Kuip and Dottie Hinson make the top 100 list?

Bet he has Josh Gibson and Oscar Charleston in the top 10

Really enjoying reading through this thread. Lots of titles I haven't read but have added to my list. Thanks. I'm about to start Where Nobody Knows Your Name: Life in the Minor Leagues of Baseball by John Feinstein.

Dunno. Book is back at the library. I'll get around to it someday. I just took a good look at my Kindle app and seen that I have a lot of books that I've never even started. So I have to catch up a some of these before I buy another book.
