This would imply you're trying to be funny. I actually found both your post and his reaction funny. The Dulcinea del Toboso one is even funnier. I believe that yeah, there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek going on here. Perhaps. Though Poe's law reigns in these matters.

Bottom line is even if every last person alive picked someone else, Sumi is the best, the greatest, the most wonderful of all and the world is just wrong as wrong can be. If you're content being an unrefined trogladite, far be it for me to take it from you. ...But I do love to watch people panic as their beliefs are challenged. Projecting, perhaps?

I like Sumi Jo as she's one of the better classical singers i have heard, especially with certain songs. but if your are asking me to name my #1 male/female it's definitely going to be the following two... Male = Luciano Pavarotti (i would imagine it's safe to say he's the #1 name in Classical music) Female = Renee Fleming (cannot be beat in voice tone/power combo if you ask me for the female side of things as when she sings it carries a lot of emotional punch when given the right song) basically they just have the best tone/power and with that comes the most emotional punch as you try to challenge those two, you simply will lose. Sumi Jo, while a quality singer, does not have as much power as Renee Fleming (this is pretty clear as i can't see someone debating the power aspect) and i like Fleming's overall tone more to even though i still listen to Sumi Jo here and there to mix things up. I first took notice of Sumi Jo because of the song Vocalise from The Ninth Gate (1999) (one of my favorite Johnny Depp movies). but i see people listing 'O Mio Babbino Caro', which is one of the best classical songs in general and Renee Fleming cannot be beat on that song. Here is one song i found on YouTube a while ago that i wished i had the studio recording (it's Pavarotti/Fleming singing together on Lucia Di Lammermoor)... www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8HqLeoludk ; but i can't seem to find that studio recording as the studio recording of that song that i do have is the same except Joan Sutherland is singing instead of Renee Fleming and while it's still a quality song, it's better with Fleming(which you see in that YouTube link). p.s. it's sad that some people don't even appreciate some Classical music out there as if you ask me it's the closest music to Heaven there is, like a little taste of Heaven here on earth. with that said, i still listen to Rock music etc like everyone else but when it comes to music with strong emotional punch with a calming effect on your soul you simply cannot beat quality Classical music overall.

It's ironic. With youtube we have access to so much great free music. There is access to a greater diversity of music than there ever was. You used to have to buy the stuff or hope they play it on radio broadcasts and maybe catch on tape.
So I don't understand why people sill limit themselves to one "best" artist. You would think they would branch out and have scores of favorites. There is such a diversity of opera and oratorios. Every singer has their specialty. No one singer does everything better than everyone else. Variety is the spice of life.
It's great that youtube offers suggestions. You should push yourselves to try them, branch out. Try some singers from the early 20th century, even.

thornberryYeah, i see what you mean and i basically agree. but for me i have much less music ill go out of my way to listen to vs movies as there are plenty of movies ill go out of my way to re-watch unlike music where i am a bit more limited. basically there are 196 movies i consider favorites even though there is roughly a few hundred more movies i like. but with that said... i am sure i stumble into some music that's good here and there but i just tend to get into movies more than music all around even though some music is still top notch for me to listen to. but since we are on the topic... while i feel Renee Fleming is at THE top of classical music with her all around voice tone/power that does not mean i don't like others in classical music outside of her as it's nice to mix it up for variety sake and others still have solid enough emotional punch. so basically i agree with you for variety sake but i think in terms of power/voice tone combo you can't top Renee Fleming on the female side of things as her overall voice tend to have more emotional punch and like i was saying music is all about emotional connection as without that it sucks. because there are some songs (i won't list examples) where they might be technically doing something impressive but it simply lacks any emotional punch and ultimately don't work because of that. because even on the Renee Fleming CD's i got you stumble into these kinds of songs here and there. p.s. as for my classical music being closest to heaven comment that you agreed with... i think that 'death metal' music (and the like) is the polar opposite end of the spectrum and is closest to hell as they just scream/growl etc as it's the only so-called music i cannot stand as it basically gives you a clear negative feeling which is the polar opposite of classical music. i don't know how anyone actually likes that stuff. because there are some types of music i don't care for but at least you can tolerate it where as with that death metal stuff, it's just the bottom of the barrel, period.

Renee Fleming has a beautiful voice and it's recognizable as hers, too. Like Pavarotti. Death metal is probably not the most hellish music. Oddly enough some 20th century classical music achieves that it my opinion. Music that is deliberately sour on the ears (I don't know the technical terms) and inspires negative emotions in the listener, unrelentingly. Mozart and Haydn knew when to use dissonance, and they did it sparingly.

thornberryIt's hard for me to believe there is something worse than death metal (and the like) overall. i just can't picture anything classical being THAT bad. like i can believe some classical music is unappealing but to get the point i can't stand it, that i have my doubts about. Don't worry about it because i don't know much about music either besides what's appealing and unappealing for me. like i might be able to have a basic conversation, kinda like i am in this topic, but there is no way i can do it in depth as i am not a expert that knows all of the technical stuff etc. hell, even the word you used 'dissonance' i had to look up the meaning of that.

Music that is deliberately sour on the ears (I don't know the technical terms) and inspires negative emotions in the listener, unrelentingly. Mozart and Haydn knew when to use dissonance, and they did it sparingly. I simply love contemporary music. It took me a while to get used to it, to adapt my ears to new languages, but now I'm a big fan. I'll give you an example. Salvatore Sciarrino's La Perfezione di uno spirito sottile: Confessedly that's not a very good introduction. It's very weird. But I love it. Before I got to love something extreme like this, I loved other more accessible pieces. For example, the opera that got me my username: Thanks for your examples. I don't find the Glass piece that unconventional. I don't find it that interesting either. It sounds like movie background music for a long, suspenseful scene. It's funny how 21st century music can be much easier to take than 20th century music. I haven't had time to find examples of the kind of thing I had in mind. I'm thinking of pieces for solo piano that have no tempo, sound like random notes being struck, usually in an attacking kind of way, dissonance that is there to shock with no relief in sight except for long dull pauses, but I can't remember who the composers of these things are. In the first piece the piccolo (or flute?) attacks are very unpleasant and the rest is slow and doesn't keep me interested. I'm afraid my classical tastes are very conventional - middle ages through early 20th century and not straying too far from classical music principles.
