I love Angela's music and I listen to her pretty much every day but Sumi is the best. 100% hands down the best.

I cannot disagree.
However, Kiri Te Kanawa is fun to say.

Good choices here. For mezzo-soprano I love Elina Garanca:

She's not on the same planet as Joan Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, Kirsten Flagstad, Lucia Popp, Mirella Freni, Montserrat Caballe, Maria Callas, Jessye Norman, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

She's not on the same planet as Joan Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, Kirsten Flagstad, Lucia Popp, Mirella Freni, Montserrat Caballe, Maria Callas, Jessye Norman, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Who isn't, Sumi Jo, or Elina Garanca? Since we don't have Nest here and you posted right after me, the question is relevant. If you meant Elina, I actually think that she holds her own as compared with the old timers, given her exquisite technique. She started singing at age 3, hehe. Her mother was (is) a voice teacher, and her father is a violinist with the Riga Opera House, I think. Or something like this. I don't have the details right now, without looking, but the bottom line is that she was raised with music and it shows. She possesses much better technique than her same-generation peer Anna Netrebko, or at least used to, since Anna has improved dramatically over the years and by now is arguably just as good. Anna used to be dismissed as just a pretty face (currently she has aged and has gained weight - still attractive in my opinion) but after performances such as her Lady Macbeth at the Met, Anna has entered the rarefied pedestal of the great singers of her generation. Regardless of technique, the timbre of her voice is simply phenomenal. Elina is fierce and versatile, and oh my God, she looks good. She is a goddess. Those blue eyes... Listen to the two of them singing together, here, in a recording session (all in street clothes) of the Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann:

Sorry, John, I meant Sumi Jo. I certainly prefer Garanca of the two.

Big crush. Classic beauty, like Catherine Deneuve: And here, au naturel, no Photoshopping, so gorgeous, so gorgeous ! She is married to a conductor. Why are some people so lucky in life???

Carl, when I say she has exquisite technique, see it here in this tour-de-force. Very difficult Baroque aria, and she executes *perfectly*, not missing a beat (uncanny sense of rhythm, knowing exactly where to enter - it helps that she is such a well-trained musician from a very young age who can read a complex score unlike some of today's singers), never ahead nor behind the instruments, agile, pitch-accurate; one never even perceives her breathing; she is a precise, well-oiled machine, which is why I say she holds her own against the old timers.
Even though her voice is more suited to beautiful and melodious legato lines, she can do the Baroque leaps very well, which is why I say she is very versatile.
The great Fabio Biondi and his excellent ensemble Europa Galante are added bonuses:

I like Sumi Jo but I find that her problem is a bit of an abrupt, unpolished delivery. She tends to start the lines in a sort of abrupt way and often she speeds up a little, often rushing the orchestra. She tends to end the lines also abruptly, instead of letting them die down elegantly. Her timbre is beautiful and her pitch control is generally accurate (but not always - look at the end of her Sempre Libera here and you'll see some pitch mistakes) but she needs work on the musicality of the lines, and needs to smooth down her transitions. She is not a smooth singer. Also, there aren't enough colors. She is sort of bland. Case in point here, where all these defaults (and some qualities) are prominently displayed:
In spite of her astounding success and accolades, she did carry these defaults throughout her career, uncorrected, and now it's too late, they became part of who she is a singer. Don't read me wrong, the balance is in her favor and she is good rather than bad, but could be better, at least as far as very exigent listeners are concerned.
I can demonstrate:
For a version with *ten times* more color, see the great Anna Moffo (not smooth either but oh boy, colors colors colors):
And if you want both: the colors, and the smooth delivery with elegant ending of the lines, don't look elsewhere: there is Maria Callas who puts both the above ladies to shame (Jo more than Moffo):
Of course this is a bit unfair because if you compare someone to Callas, chances are that the person will be on the losing end of the comparison.
The bottom line is that Sumi Jo is a good singer, or even a very good singer (as much as I picked a video clip where her problems are prominent, there are others where she does better) but I don't find her to be a great singer.

Where's the quote from HvK claiming SJ was a better singer than all those I mentioned?
