So this is something I've noticed in Jack Nicholson films that, at first, was just kind of weird, but the more films of his that I saw, really gets more and more noticeable. And I'm wondering if I'm the only person that's noted this......
Have you all noticed that in just about every Jack Nicholson film, there is a scene that shows him either asleep, or just waking up, or struggling to get to sleep? Think about it, how many of his films involve a moment with Jack and sleep?
The Shining, Cuckoo's Nest, As Good As It Gets, Chinatown, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, About Schmidt......the list goes on.....there is a part involving Jack and sleep of some kind.
Is this total coincidence, do directors think Jack plays sleep well, is there some kind of hidden message, or am I just bored and my mind is wandering too much? These are all interesting questions, but honestly, think of Jack Nicholson films and think about how often you see him sleeping.

Nothing?
Gee, I thought it would be an interesting topic for conversation, maybe not though.

I'm looking into the future, and I'm seeing one of you movie geniuses bringing up Jack's sleep motif in a future thread. This will happen, I can guarantee it.

millar70 Mostly in every movie, Nicholson has a yelling-screaming-swearing attack with bulging eyes and neck chords .... similar to Pacino's chronic flinging of f-bombs as if he had just discovered the word ! Now, I suppose I shall have to watch every Nicholson movie again and look for the darned sleeping thing ! Thanks a bunch !
edit: I think this is the serious answer .... is there some kind of hidden message, or am I just bored and my mind is wandering too much?

Nearly every Jack movie features a scene involving him and sleep. I'm telling ya, you will notice this every time you watch a Jack film from here on out. You're welcome.

Why is it not? I mean, obviously it's not as interesting as imagining every single actor and actress as a Star Wars character, but I figured maybe a new topic might be welcomed.

It isn't interesting because "who cares?" It is no different than the Brad Pitt eating and Tom Cruise running thing. Is it something written in their contract or is it coincidence? There is no reason to think there is some hidden meaning to it. I mean how much speculation can even be done on the subject? It is interesting in that once you notice it it is something you noticed, but after that there isn't much else to discuss or think about.

You say it's uninteresting, yet from here on in, EVERY TIME you watch a film featuring Jack Nicholson, you WILL be watching out for a scene involving sleep. Seems pretty interesting to me.
