linguistics. i'm just studying to pass the time really, considering nightclubs and travel aren't doable things at the moment and i don't know what else to spend my savings on during lockdown. was getting sick of working 6-7 day workweeks. if i do end up using my degree i'll probably use it to teach english overseas.

I see nothing useless in that degree. my dad wouldn't pay for it because he told me it was useless. had to wait years to be eligible to apply for financial aid using my own income.

It it something that you can use to your benefit vocationally. Sometimes parents can be dense, cruel and controlling. If you were studying something like Gender Studies, then I would say that would be useless. the screenshot that someone posted that inspired this discussion

Diversity and inclusion training is not illegal lol. I work for one of the largest banks in the world and I literally did diversity and inclusion training two weeks ago, as I've done every year for the last five years. What on earth is that girl on about?

Some people on IMDb’s Soapbox used to mock Ivymeer for studying art history (but that was mainly because they didn’t like her) and there seems to be the opinion that learning should only be available if it helps people get jobs. That said linguistics has many uses (like helping the makers of Arrival construct an alien language).

"I'm just studying to pass the time really...."
Studying a subject of interest is a valuable use of time, IMO. I can't see a "down side."

Getting a degree focusing on that language would probably be better. I think linguistics teaches *about* languages. You already speak English, two Chinese languages and you're still learning Russian, right? Just go off those.

Immersion is the best teacher. Move to where you want to go. You used to be in politics, you can be an interpreter or a diplomat.

You'd work for the Canadian government, you'd be covered, yes? You'd graduate in a couple years, borders might be open.
Don't blow away your money with no plan.

the entirety of my tuition and materials is covered by grants, at least for now. And if I get approved for disability funding I’ll get my living costs covered too. I still work too.
