7 hours a night plus more on weekends
I have adopted a new sleep schedule. Used to be that I would be playing games on my iPad until 10:00 or even longer. As such, I wasn't turning in until 11:00. I now have changed the settings so that it 'shuts down' at 9:30. It doesn't actually shut down - I just can't access any apps after this time. Allows me a few minutes to unwind. At about 9:45, I start getting ready for bed.
Of course, since I'm not 25 anymore ( ), I usually wake up at the same time each day, which is just after 6:00am. This was because when I was working in the office, that's the time I would get up, So, now, I'm usually tossing and turning for an hour. I get up at 7:00am.
My schedule was 7:30am to 4:00pm, but now I do 8:00am to 4:30pm.
I have been close quite a few times to 7 hours sleep per night. However, it still doesn't feel like enough.
I usually have a good nap on Saturday afternoon.

I think on average I sleep for about 6 hours a day/ 42 hours a week but sleep slightly more on the weekends. honestly, this would kill me. i need 9 hours of sleep, 8 is on occasion also ok. anything less than that and I am grumpy, angry, sad and scared in the morning and get sleepy in the afternoon.. I can easily sleep 10-11 hours too. 12 is too much. but 10-11 is ok and I do so at least a few times a week.

On the advice of my doctor, I've made it a point to get 7 hours per night. It has benefitted me greatly.

This time of year, probably 7. In the spring, and early summer, when it's light earlier, I get a little less because I wake up when it gets light.
Weekends aren't different for me because I'm retired.

This exactly. 9 hours is optimal, much less and I can barely function and feel sleepy already in early afternoon. Few hours more is good too. Nothing to do with poor sleep quality or anything like that, I hardly ever wake up at night. It's just that I need a lot of sleep.

I'm kind of all over the place. Mostly, I don't sleep through the entire night. I will probably average about 5 hours sleep over the course of a night, but it's not solid. Some nights I can't sleep at all, and get up to read, go back around 4:30 AM, and sleep for 2 or 3 hours. Part of it has to due with medical issues. And sometimes my husband snores and keeps me awake. I sleep with earplugs and a white noise machine. I have to have a dark, cool room. If not, I can't sleep at all.

NoraIt's interesting you mentioned that thing about waking up feeling scared. I get that too, waking up feeling afraid. I think it's adrenaline or something, but I've not heard of too many other people waking up with that rush of fear. It's awful.

I usually have no sleeping pattern (particularly since the lockdown as I can work from home anytime). There could be 5 continuous days in which I don't get more than 4.5 hours sleep. Which causes a lot of problem. Irritation, tiredness, anxiety etc. It does get fine once in a while but the problem recurs again and again. At least has since last 18 years.

My father has no issues with sleep. I took on my mother's side. My mother has sleep problem (not as severe as me though). Office life was more suited to me and my sleeping habit was somewhat better. That is another reason why I am not liking WFH.

I get really sad and scared in such case for some reason, i mean i had mornings when I felt almost sucidal from lack of sleep. like it felt its discomfort at a level thats not sustainable with living... very weird feeling. it usually goes away within about 30 minutes after i wake up/get up but those 30 minutes can be really hard. not sure what it is causes by, some kind of chemical reaction in my brain associates lack of sleep with physical danger maybe? who knows. its nice to know someone else knows what i am talking about. I have adjustes my life so it doest happen when I can avoid it.

If not, I highly recommend looking into all of those. If sleeping 4-5 hours a day is not the natural preference of your brain and body but a result of something malfunctioning in your brain or body, addressing it can be a great relief and prevent bigger health issues in the future.
