Who would have thought this franchise would still be in good shape after 25 years, 7 films, and Tom Cruise pushing 60? It doesn't seem like this franchise is slowing down after all that. Most franchises at this point would have many critics/fans wanting it to stop, but this has been a rarity. The first film of this franchise is still an entertainingly slick summer blockbuster spy adventure overall. Some critics/fans though have said the movie has a confusing story/plot (Not too hard if you follow it closely), that it's style over substance, that it has lulls between each action sequence, and that director Brian De Palma is basically a director-for-hire on this film although he gives the film a stylish direction. The action sequences though still hold up. The vault sequence is still the major highlight of the film and was a blast to first watch in the theater 25 years ago. The train sequence is also entertaining if unrealistic (that helicopter explosion would really kill Cruise and not throw him onto a train). Even the early mission is fun to watch with the actor teamwork and stylish camera work (One problem - How does Cruise know another IMF team is watching him as well as who the exact members are who are later revealed in the restaurant?). Cruise is kind of similar to the way his character is in Top Gun, but he's fun to watch and grounds the proceedings. The other actors (Emilio Estevez, Jean Reno, Jon Voight, Ving Rhames, etc.) do fine work although many critics/fans didn't like Jon Voight as Phelps being the villain since it goes against the TV show's portrayal of Phelps. So while this mission isn't perfect, it still has held up well and does its job as an entertaining summer spy blockbuster. I remember my local movie theater giving away Apple posters that had Tom Cruise on them from this movie. 3/4. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Mission: Impossible (1996) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"Slick update of the vintage TV spy series about a crack undercover unit is full of high-tech hijinks, as "team leader" Cruise tries to learn what went wrong on a crucial mission in Prague--and discover who set them up. Energy wanes at several junctions, only to be revved up again for a train-and-helicopter chase finale. Lalo Schifrin's memorable TV theme is reused here, at a much higher decibel level. Cruise coexecutive-produced. Emilio Estevez appears unbilled. Followed by six sequels. Panavision."

I watched it again recently. I have seen it a few times so I guess it is one of those 90s films I can rewatch now and then.
Having not watched the tv series I can't comment on a comparison but the twist worked for me when I first saw it. I watched this before Eraser but the stories are so similar. I revisit this more than Eraser.
The spfx are good for the time but it is unrealistic-not only the helicopter but Cruise would not be able to hold on to the train--Voight is using some kind of magnetic suction cups to stay on yet Cruise is able to flop around and hold--this kind of cgi-assisted stunt breaks the realism barrier. I think the best scene for Cruise is with Redgrave--I find him to get high-pitched and whiny at times and overact. "My team is dead! They're all dead!" Look at him when he is doing the internet search "Book of Job...book of Job.."
I just don't think he is a natural action star--he exaggerates his actions to compensate--that "slight of hand" disk scene for example.
I am sure I will rewatch it again though at some point.

Are you complaining about the realism of Tom Cruise not being able to hold on to a fast train in a fictional world where people wear each other's faces?

Are you complaining about the realism of Tom Cruise not being able to hold on to a fast train in a fictional world where people wear each other's faces? Because a mask is taken as something more realistic-you can disguise yourself with a rubber mask. You cannot hang onto a train going what--a hundred miles an hour" with your bare hands especially when the guy in front of you is using magnet suction cups and a harness.

No, you can't convincingly fool someone else's wife that you're her husband by wearing his face no matter how rubbery it is. There's actually train walking tech in the works in real life and Tom is seen clinging on to the Eurostar for dear life he isn't exactly having a comfortable relaxed ride on top of the train.

You try it then-go on that train and try hanging on. I'll be there with the section cups though.

And literal shapeshifting is less ridiculous to you because? ? That's a theatrical shortcut. The train antics are superman stuff.
His fingers wouldn't be strong enough to hold on-his body would slam hard against the train roof. There's a scene in the third one where he punches out three big guys while he is lying on a gurney. He could not generate the upper body strength to hit them from a seated position.
More superman stuff. We can say the mask is some kind of special technology but what he does with hands on a train roof--that's just defying physics.

I've had this similar conversation regarding Godzilla vs Kong, spaceships or light belching lizards that was just as hilarious as this conversation. You can say some special convenient mask from primeetc's basement can shape masks to a human's face ignoring skull shape, but you're pissing yourself laughing at "spidertrain". I'll admit both are ridiculous but the difference is you're the one stuck on the train ride to nowhere with your argument.

If he was wearing special gloves I could overlook it--but not the way it is shown in the movie. He's not Patrick Stewart after all.

You seriously want to open yourself to another fat Yaphet Kotto response from me regarding balancing on a high speed train...

You guys should just agree that it's an action/adventure movie that requires the usual suspension of disbelief.

I was just pointing out that the stunts ushered in the age of superman physics because they didn't use physical stunts as much. Yeah they got a wind fan so he's being blown around--it looks realistic from that perspective but now you can see how impossible the mission is since the novelty of the FX innovation wears off.

The original is my favorite of the franchise. They get dumber and more ridiculous as the series goes on.

It's fine. Tom Cruise is solid but Jon Voight wasn't an interesting villain.
