There was a weird trend of non-kid friendly franchises being marketed towards kids in the 80s and 90s, but Robocop is possibly the weirdest example. At least the Rambo and Terminator movies are actually meant to be cool action films. The first Robocop is supposed to be satirical.

Yes. It was very common for R-rated movies to have action figures.
I don't remember the RoboCop cartoon at all. I kind of want to watch it now though, as I love 1980's and 1990's animation.
There was a Toxic Avenger animated show back in the day too. That one I did watch when I was a kid.

I wasnt really into most toys back then (weird kid, I preferred building model planes and tabletop war games) but I remember seeing them. I don’t recall watching the cartoon but I did play the arcade game a few times. Pretty fun side scroller with a bit of voice clips from the film if I recall. “Drop it!”
It was kind of a weird era though having adult movies adapted into cartoons a d toy lines. I’m pretty sure I remember a Rambo cartoon too. Guess parents were a little more laid back during those days, my dad was okay with me watching most of those movies. Mom probably would have said no but she usually didn’t argue with my Dad about that stuff (at least not in front of my brother and I, she might have given him an ear full once we were in bed, haha).
For example I was banished to my room when my parents watched Blue Lagoon and Flashdance. I guess it was okay to see people blown away but not okay to see some naked people haha.

Model vehicles are basically toys anyway some that you don't need to attach together, so don't worry you were hardly the child of Michael Myers because of that.

Yes. Robocop had a 2nd cartoon where he was some Inspector Gadget knockoff. Like he had every tool for the job.

I remember getting a Robocop action figure for christmas when I was about six or seven.
I also remember seeing the film a few months before and having nightmare's about the way the ED-209 moves.

Hmm, Toxic Avenger probably nudges Robocop out of contention for most inappropriate children’s cartoon/ toy spinoff.
Honestly, parents didn’t care what we watched in the 80s.

I'm trying to think what the last rated R movie with children's merchandise was. The MAtrix?

I know it's not a movie, but I can't believe this seriously exists:

I'm trying to think what the last rated R movie with children's merchandise was. The MAtrix? I can't even think of that many R-rated movies since The Matrix that would even make for good action figures. Original R-rated franchises that would make good action figures sort of died out after The Matrix. I'm not sure how popular action figures were after 2000 anyway.

There was actually supposed to be an "Aliens" children's cartoon at one point until it got axed: They did make the toys for Aliens in the late 80s. And an Alien toy for the 1979 film.
