Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film.
FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWING
Scandal Sheet (1952, Phil Karlson) A very fun and exciting film noir, recommended. 7/10
Lawman (1971, Michael Winner) Revisionist western with a classic cast featuring Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J Cobb and Robert Duvall. Some pacing issues but a solid effort all the same. 6-6.5/10
The Last of Sheila (1973, Herbert Ross) This is a murder mystery with an all star cast. It is a little patchy over all but has some good stretches however it is a little over complicated and convoluted. Still, it’s worth a watch. 6/10
Meek’s Cutoff (2010, Kelly Reinhardt) This film shows realistically the hardships of travelling across the old west but is not all that entertaining. 5/10
REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
Robocop (1987, Paul Verhoeven) blu ray A classic satire with violence and mayhem. Well made and still a blast. 8.5/10
Celebrity (1998, Woody Allen) blu ray This held up and then some since my last viewing. Great black and white film with a superb cast and a lot of fun scenes. Really well paced and an underrated film from the prolific director. 7.5/10
3:10 to Yuma (2007, James Mangold) UHD Disc Quality remake of a classic western that is well made and ramps up the action set pieces without losing the heart of the story. 7.5/10
Rumble Fish (1983, Frances Ford Coppola) blu ray A very stylistic black and white film interpretation of the Hinton novel. 7/10
Jungle Fever (1991, Spike Lee) blu ray A good film about race relations that might be too drawn out with too much dead space. Still entertaining in spurts with some great monologues. 6/10
FIRST TIME DOCUMENTARY VIEWING
Framing John DeLorean (2019, Don Argott) Netflix Story of John DeLorean intercut with recreations starring Alec Baldwin as John DeLorean. Solid film
Black Holes: The Edge of All we Know (2020, Peter Galison) Netflix Interesting documentary about the race to capture the first image of a black hole. Solid Film
REPEAT TV VIEWING
Seinfeld (1992, Season Four) DVD An all time great show and one of their best seasons if not the best. Superior TV

Meek's Cutoff - 7/10
RoboCop - 8/10
Celebrity - 7.5/10
3:10 to Yuma - 8/10
Rumble Fish - 7/10
Seinfeld: Season 4 - 10/10
First Time Viewings:
Phffft (1954, Mark Robson) This one tells an amusing story and is well cast. Judy Holliday, Jack Lemmon, and Kim Novak all deliver good performances. 7/10
It Should Happen to You (1954, George Cukor) Released earlier in the year than Phffft this one also stars Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon, with this being Lemmon's first film. It's pretty good. 7/10
Beauty and the Beast (1946, Jean Cocteau) This telling of the classic tale has nice black and white photography, good performances, and it does a pretty good job with the story. 7/10
The Jungle Book (1942, Zoltan Korda) It looks nice, but the characters and story didn't fully grab me. The animated one remains the only telling of this story I fully like. 6/10
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021, Michael Chaves) Easily the weakest of the three. It has some good stuff, but the most interesting parts of the story aren't shown. 5.5/10
The Absent Minded Professor (1961, Robert Stevenson) I rewatched Flubber last week after not having seen it in a long time, so I decided to give the original movie a shot. It's still comedic, but less silly and more enjoyable overall. 7/10
Big Fish (2003, Tim Burton) Not sure why I took so long to get to this one, but I quite enjoyed it. It's a fun story full of colorful characters, played by a strong cast, and it's entertaining throughout. 7.5/10
Unfaithful (2002, Adrian Lyne) I was a bit worried about this one when the last act started, but it remained interesting and engaging for me. Diane Lane and Richard Gere both give strong performances. 7/10
Cyrus (2010, Mark Duplass & Jay Duplass) I quite liked this one. It wasn't what I expected, but I was glad of that. It's less over the top than I thought it would be and more subtle and emotional. Good work from John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, and Marisa Tomei helps the proceedings. 7.5/10
Repeat Viewings:
Knowing (2009, Alex Proyas) Hadn't seen this since the theater and my thoughts remain the same. Good premise, but the it fumbles a bit in the last act. 6.5/10
The Thing (1982, John Carpenter) A horror classic that's always a great watch. It's well cast, intense, has an atmospheric score, and incredible effects. 9/10
The Jungle Book (1967, Wolfgang Reitherman) One of my favorite Disney animated films. It has a couple great songs, nice hand drawn animation, awesome characters, and it's very entertaining. 8/10
TV Viewings:
King of the Hill: Season 13 (2008-2010) 8/10

FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWINGScandal Sheet (1952, Phil Karlson)A very fun and exciting film noir, recommended. 7/10Lawman (1971, Michael Winner)Revisionist western with a classic cast featuring Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J Cobb and Robert Duvall. Some pacing issues but a solid effort all the same. 6-6.5/10The Last of Sheila (1973, Herbert Ross)This is a murder mystery with an all star cast. It is a little patchy over all but has some good stretches however it is a little over complicated and convoluted. Still, it’s worth a watch. 6/10Meek’s Cutoff (2010, Kelly Reinhardt)This film shows realistically the hardships of travelling across the old west but is not all that entertaining. 5/10REPEAT MOVIE VIEWINGRobocop (1987, Paul Verhoeven)blu rayA classic satire with violence and mayhem. Well made and still a blast. 8.5/10Celebrity (1998, Woody Allen) blu rayThis held up and then some since my last viewing. Great black and white film with a superb cast and a lot of fun scenes. Really well paced and an underrated film from the prolific director. 7.5/103:10 to Yuma (2007, James Mangold) UHD DiscQuality remake of a classic western that is well made and ramps up the action set pieces without losing the heart of the story. 7.5/10Rumble Fish (1983, Frances Ford Coppola) blu rayA very stylistic black and white film interpretation of the Hinton novel. 7/10Jungle Fever (1991, Spike Lee) blu rayA good film about race relations that might be too drawn out with too much dead space. Still entertaining in spurts with some great monologues. 6/10FIRST TIME DOCUMENTARY VIEWINGFraming John DeLorean (2019, Don Argott) NetflixStory of John DeLorean intercut with recreations starring Alec Baldwin as John DeLorean. Robocop (1987, Paul Verhoeven) One of Verhoeven's best. 8/10
3:10 to Yuma (2007, James Mangold) Never seen the original. I liked Russell Crowe, but thought that Christian Bale and Ben Foster gave rather weak performances. 5/10

Son (2021) - 2/10Very poor horror film that makes little sense. Saw 3D (2010) - 7/10Good entry in the Saw saga. Endangered Species (2021) - 3/10A really dumb family gets lost in Africa where CGI animals attack them. From the Depths (2020) - 1/10Absolutely awful film advertised as a shark film really about a crazy lady who sees her dead sister. Chocolat (2000) - 4/10A woman opens a chocolate store in a small French village. Trouble ensues. OK. Best Film this Week: Worst Film this Week: Chocolat (2000) - 6/10 A solid romantic drama, but probably only worth watching for fans of Juliette Binoche.
