Never seen it myself, but I hear it's a popular Kurt Russell film and collaboration with director John Carpenter. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - 1.5 out of 4 stars
"Blowhard trucker Russell finds himself knee-deep in Chinatown intrigue (and mumbo-jumbo) when a friend's fiancée is kidnapped right in front of his eyes. High-tech INDIANA JONES-style adventure has heavy tongue-in-cheek attitude, but everything else about it is heavy, too...including Russell's John Wayne-ish swagger. Good electronic score by director Carpenter. Panavision."

Big Trouble in Little China (1986), directed by John Carpenter. Blowhard truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), with a line of patter like the cheapest pulp fiction, stumbles into a Chinese martial arts fantasy with warring street gangs, magicians, demons and many hells. He has no idea what is going on, and having seen the film several times, neither do I, which makes me feel some camaraderie towards him. An ancient undead sorcerer, David Lo Pan (James Hong) will recover his mortality (?) if he sacrifices the correct green-eyed woman. Jack just wants his truck back. And to save the girls. It's audacious and has many funny bits. The whole thing never really comes together and I think Russell was still trying to figure out his character. Some of the scenes look like rehearsals. James Hong is great in all of his manifestations. I once saw a posting from someone who sat next him at a dinner and didn't know who he was. They were talking about some kids' show. But...but... (I spluttered) what about Blade Runner (1982), what about Big Trouble in Little China and a few hundred other TV shows... Available on Blu-ray.

Starts off fun but kind of peters out near the end. Kurt Russell’s Jack Burton is a clear influence to Chris Pratt’s Star Lord

3/10 It has a big cult following but I never liked it really.

Not the best John Carpenter/Kurt Russell collaboration, but a lot of fun IMO. I bought the DVD two-disc special edition some years ago. This film is also the subject of one of the earliest quote threads.

It's a weird one. Genre-wise I suppose it would be classed as fantasy but there isn't any other movie I can think of that feels quite like it. Regardless, in spite of strong leads - with Kim Cattrall looking sublime here - the movie didn't really work for me. One of Carpenter's lesser offerings IMO.
