Nor do you go about establishing the existence of content or theme in a show by examining the frequency of content or themes in completely different shows.

Let me hold your hand and explain how you prove the existence of content or theme in a work of art: you talk about what is actually in the work itself. You cite how the writer or director directs our attention to the themes and explain how there would be no point of them doing these things unless those themes were important to them. And if you are desperate, you quote the writer or director in their own words talking about why they were concerned about the theme.

So go ahead and try this with Mad Men or The Sopranos or Breaking Bad.
