Just watched for the first time in a while and i don't know how i never fully realized how stupid the characters are...and also how badly coincidental so much of the film is. It was laughable. First...a hot spring boils people alive near a dormant volcano and the lead researcher guy doesn't believe it's anything to be concerned about. At the very least aren't we concerned about the towns water sources? Second...the second they are all managed to be convinced theres a problem...literally the second they decide to evacuate the town, the volcano starts messing crap up. Earthquakes and acid water and lava everywhere. Third...The Grandma....listen i know old people can be stubborn, but you built a house under a goddamn volcano and your daughter in law calls to tell you theyre evacuating the town because the volcano is active. Get outta there you old dingbat! Fourth...Stupid kids driving up to stupid grandmas instead of just packing your bags like your mom said. Fifth...I know they were trapped but lets take a boat ride across acid lake and hope for the best? Come on really? Sixth...I dont even know they were trapped cuz they didn't bother trying anything else but hey theres this difficult terrain filled with liquid hot magma blocking the next mile of road...lets just drive across it and hope we don't explode or burn alive in this truck? Come on really? Seventh...Little bit of credit for saying we've only got one chance at saving the dog...but sorry that dog probably has no chance if im driving a truck on fire through flaming lava pits trying to escape an active volcano. Fido you're on your own. Eighth...I forgot about him driving his truck across the river. I get it, your engine has a snorkel...but unless you got a propellor it wouldn't do much good in a 5' deep gravel creek bed. Come on. Nineth...Stupid lead research guy driving his crappy minivan instead of getting into one of the numerous Humvees leaving the town? I mean you were asking to get stuck on the bridge and killed. Why were you last also? Why is the minivan bringing up the rear in that convoy? What the crap? Tenth...Volcano goes boom just late enough to give our main characters a chance at escaping into the underground mines? For one....why is the mine a safe haven? Isn't magma underground mostly? Earthquakes, acid water and an exploding cloud but driving 10 feet into an abandoned mine is a safe zone? Go f-ck yourself! Eleventh...Nasa thing beeps for 'a day or two' before anyone notices? Not even thinking to mention it or check on it? Its probably just an error, no biggie. Also...2 days stuck in that crushed car for Pierce? I know he's a capable guy but he had to have been close to death there. I actually give them so credit here the claustrophobia i felt during that scene made me shudder. Overall i enjoyed it...lol...i just like poking fun at it. Lots of cliches and coincidences tho. A harsher critic would eyeroll many times during this movie. Also the little girl grew up to be quite a fox...

I think you are taking this intentionally silly movie too seriously.
Also, some of the stuff isn't as bad as you make it out to be. Nobody can say for sure what people would do in these situations.

I think you are taking this intentionally silly movie too seriously. Am I? I would have chanced the boat on acid water too, if it was likely death either way. What would you have done?

I would have chanced the boat on acid water too, if it was likely death either way. Probably me too. Plus I’m not entirely sure they knew the lake was acid at first. I know I just watched but I can’t remember the beginning of that scene. Maybe I was peeing.

Not because it was dumb (at 13 I didn't really notice anyway), but because I didn't think it was very much fun. I remember liking the acting and the cgi and locations, but the stories of most disaster movies aren't very interesting to me, usually because they are just a a series of cliches. Twister is one of the exceptions. There is a laid back energy and unique quality to that movie. I remember liking Volcano more at the time, because it is the more OTT of the 2.

Wow... I am shocked by some of the comments some posters have made concerning this movie... It reminds me of the interview that Ron Howard did, concerning the test screening of "Apollo 13", where someone in the audience who reviewed the film said the movie was total Hollywood fiction, and that in real life, the Astronauts would have died... Clearly comments made by some idiot that didn't know a damn thing about history, and that the film was basically a Bio Picture concerning the real "Apollo 13"... I too, once thought that this movie was a bit unrealistic... But, I always thought it was more realistic than the 1997 film, "Volcano", starring Tommy Lee Jones... Then, A couple of years ago, I found myself wanting to see a Bio Picture, that Art Carney starred in 1981, about the Mt Saint Helen's eruption that happened in 1980... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Helens_(film)The title of the film goes by several different names, but it stars Art Carney...I bought a copy of the film on DVD from Amazon... and as I watched the film, it seemed very familiar to me... Then, I realized that it was very similar to another movie that I had seen... "Dante's Peak"! As I continued to watch the film, I was surprised as to how much it continued to be, much like the newer film... And yes... There was a man who refused to leave his home " under a goddamn volcano" despite evacuation orders made before Mt Saint Helen's was about to blow... His Name Was: Harry R. Trumanen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_R._TrumanAnd he died when it erupted. After seeing the older film, and knowing that it was a bio picture... I have to disagree...I have to wonder, if the fictional "Dante's Peak" film, might have been, a "Remake" ( if one might say that), based on the real Mt Saint Helen's eruption event... Sure, there may be a lot of "Hollywood" stuff in there... including the ending, where they hide in the mine... But laughable? No... Sadly, I don't believe that, because stuff like what happens in the movie, apparently, really does happen... I'm still not sure about the lake turning to acid though... However, I'm no volcanolist, so, who knows...

However, I'm no volcanolist, so, who knows... This is the problem with some stuff. That not everybody knows what is realistic and what isn't and some stuff is very rare, but can come off as very unrealistic in a movie, even if it has happened in reality. Not everybody has knowledge of everything, so I don't make a habit of calling people out for finding stuff "unrealistic" even if it is something that has happened or could possibly happen. It can also be that they way it is portrayed in the movie is in a way that isn't believable. A filmmaker can take something that has happened or likely to happen and direct and write it in a way that is completely unconvincing. When it comes to the man who refused to leave his house as you mentioned, I can believe that, but the character in the movie has to be written in a way where you believe that that specific character would not leave. In the case of this movie I don't remember if it is consistent with the grandmother's character and performance that she would refuse to leave her home. I assume that in most of the cases where someone refuses to leave their house it is because they are in denial that they are actually in any danger, not that they see a lake of lava flowing towards there house and just stand there and say "Nope, I am not leaving."

Yes, I pointed out that I think he is taking it too seriously, but to write all of what you wrote and to seem personally offended is just ridiculous. Unless you are doing some kind of comedy act that I am missing. I guess I'll just ask - why did this bother you so much? Also, that part where you call him a nitpicker and then assert that he won't accept stuff based on that? Comes off like you are saying you think he is incapable of changing his mind or accepting new information. Maybe you weren't paying attention, but once I pointed out to him about the acid lake, he immediately did accept it. I wonder how many mistakes you have made while watching movies. Or are you a perfect thinker and know all? Now you got me bothered and being a bit of a hypocrite.

It is one of my least favorite sub-genres. I like a few though, my favorite probably being The Poseidon Adventure. That has a true creativity to it imo. Dante's Peak is certainly better than garbage like The Swarm or Into the Storm though.

7 and 9 I agree with you about but other than that welcome to the 90s cliche. The rest of your list is a bit of meh, the old person refusing to leave his or her home or deceased lover's grave in any situation is stupid beyond belief but not as unrealistic as we all wish it would be. Yes, I would have left the dog or any pet behind at that stage of a natural disaster, pet saving in movies is a major yawn for me.

Dante's Peak was an alright movie. I liked it more than Volcano, which was its comparable rival, but there are better disaster films that I'd choose over it if I have the option to (which has happened a few times now).
Now, to address some of the issues you have:
The kids driving to Grandma's place is pretty logical if you look at it from the kids' point of view. They love her and look up to her, so why wouldn't they go to her? If someone I knew and loved was in a position of peril yet they refused to leave their home, I'd try to do something to persuade them to leave. Many years ago I had an aunt who was under imminent threat from a cyclone which posed a direct threat to her life based on the direction of the cyclone (heading straight towards her coastal town) and due to her house being in an area that was lower than sea level. She was refusing to leave for higher ground, so I actually shouted at her over the phone that she was in grave danger and was rapidly running out of time and options. At the last minute, she heeded my advice and went up to her son's holiday house which was on higher ground and sturdier than her home. Lucky for her the cyclone changed direction at the last minute also and hit the next town up from hers.
Number five is the only option left if a whole lot of lava has swallowed up the roads and the cars and then the house, but the bit that gets me every time is Linda Hamilton's "acid eats metal!" line. Whenever I hear her say it, I respond with "you don't say!". In reality, by that point the lake would be producing poisonous gases, which would be a bigger, and more lethal, threat than the acid.
It is possible to drive over hot lava, if it is hard enough. They were pushing the limits with it, though. Kudos for the dog for surviving all that on his own until they rescued him, that was one tough heat-resistant dog!
