I'm a huge fan of so much that is British. Some examples that come to mind, and they don't all fit in with TV, would be things like Monty Python, any of the Terry Pratchet movies/series/books, Keeping Up Appearances, Fawlty Tower, Black Adder (all of them), A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Are You Being Served, Waiting For God,....oh the list goes on!

Here in my area, the only Britcoms that are shown on a regular basis are Keeping up Appearances and As Time Goes By. We used to get a few others but not any more. We have BBC America but there's nothing special there except Dr. Who and its the same old stuff over and over. I would love to see again Father Ted, ABFAB and several others that I've seen before.Thank God for YouTube which airs quite a few old shows.

I've been on a "Keeping Up Appearances" marathon of late. I simply adore Mrs. B-U-C-K-E-T pronounced BOUQUET! Father Ted, Vicar of Dibley, those are good. I also like Doc Martin although that's not a comedy, it's an acquired taste.

Hyacinth drives me nuts with all of her ridiculous pretensions, which I get is the whole point of the character. I just wished that someone would have tried to call her out,but they were all too cowed by her. I love her family, esp Onslow and Daisy. My favorite episode was the finale when Hyacinth finally gave in and just cut loose on the cruise ship.

My favorite episode was the finale when Hyacinth finally gave in and just cut loose on the cruise ship. That wasn't the finale, but I do know which episode you're referring to. Actually Mrs. Counselor Nugent gets away with calling her Mrs. BUCKET (not Bouquet) and Hyacinth doesn't correct her. I think the Colonel does on occasion (refers to her as the Bucket Filly I believe). Onslow is pretty straight forward, what you see is what you get. I admit I have a hard time with that high pitched voice of hers. It's akin to raking nails across a chalk board or rubbing two pieces of Styrofoam together. But I think the overall gist of the show is still cute and funny, and I like the characters, and the common thread of how every-day normal folks find different ways of coping with this quite annoying lady. It's still one of my top favourites, along with Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Black Books, Are You Being Served, Vicar of Dibley, etc., etc.

The Vicar of Dibley is a riot. I enjoy Dawn French in almost anything but esp whenever she's teamed up with Jennifer Saunders. Like I said earlier, PBS and BBC America no longer show any Brit Coms. Years sgo, I watched Butterflies, To The Manor Born(another favorite),Good Neighbors, Mapp and Lucia. By chance,I caught Gimme,Gimme,Gimme which I thought was a lot of fun. No sophistication but it made me laugh which is what counts.

I find Are You Being Served immensely enjoyable. My favorite characters are Mrs. Slocombe and Mr. Humphries.

I've watched a LOT of britcoms on public television and find them dreadfully UNFUNNY. Those only one mildly interesting is "Are you Being Served," and even that wouldn't pass muster on American TV. "Keep up Appearances," which is supposedly "hilarious," is just painful to watch. Awful. The characters are cartoons, the laugh track is annoying and distracting, and it it JUST ISN'T FUNNY.

I'm fond of Britcoms. Many are taped in front of a live audience. I'm not a fan of brash American TV, especially the craze for reality shows.

The only Britcom I have watched, and loved, is "Mind Your Language". It was just amazing.

British comedy is not only an acquired taste but you also need to pay attention. it is not mindless drivel. I have been watching BC since I was about 6 and I immediately got the jokes/funny bits. Whether you know what he is doing or not, how can you NOT laugh at Basil Fawlty doing the 'silly walk' in The Germans episode of Fawlty Towers???
I like most British comedy. One show I can not stand is both the British and the American versions of The Office. sorry. I don't see how encasing someone's stapler in Jell-O is funny.
I can understand why people don't like Hyacinth Bucket/Booquay. She is very pushy and a social hypocrite. We all know $$$ does not mean anything... she loved Bruce because he made enough for a house with room for a pony, sauna and Mercedes, but she didn't notice all the times Violet called Hyacinth worrying about Bruce cross dressing. Same with Onslow. when you really needed something/someone, you could rely on Onslow and Daisy.
Everyone else makes up for her. Elizabeth throwing the Royal Doulton with the hand painted periwinkles around the room due to fear. Her brother running away from Hyacinth who is singing at him. Daddy still thinking it is the war and patrolling the street.
the 90's was a good time for PBS to expose America to a variety of British Comedy.
The Brittas Empire, You Rang M'Lord, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Mr Bean, One Foot in the Grave, Father Ted, Allo' Allo', The Vicar of Dibley, AYBS?, French and Saunders, Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, Chef!, Open All Hours and more were shown throughout the 90's.
Later came Barbara and Coupling.

One Foot In The Grave, was one of my childhood favourites! Richard Wilson was hilarious as Victor Meldrew.

The original UK version is one of my all time favourites. I think the fact that Gareth was so wound up about Tim putting his stapler in jelly is what was funny, not the act itself.
