Unseeded Chilean Garin, whom I had never heard of before, comes back from two sets down to beat Australian de Minaur on the fifth set tie-breaker. Did the rules change? I thought there was no tie-breaker in the fifth set at Wimbledon. *** Edit *** Also, it looks like he won the tie-breaker by the score of 10-6. What sorcery is that? Shouldn't it have ended at 8-6? They’ve had final set tiebreaks at Wimbledon since 2019. First to ten points wins a final set tiebreak (as long as it’s by two clear points) See earlier in the thread. It’s the same in all the slams now.
Thanks. I knew that the US Open had fifth-set tie-breakers and I had a vague idea that one or more of the other Majors had introduced a limit to the duration of the fifth set - that it would go to a tie-breaker if the set were still ties at 12-12 or something like that.

Whoa, Djokovic in trouble in his quarter-final match against Italian Jannik Sinner. Down one set and a break on the second set.
I had the TV on while having breakfast and Djokovic was a break up on the first set. Sinner must have broken back and then a second time to go ahead 7-5.

Yup, beat down going on by the Italian redhead on Djokovic so far. It was surprising to me how efficiently he took Alcaraz out.

Djokovic up 4 - 1 in the third. This could go a long way.

The match now becomes something that will haunt Sinner. Up two sets to none on Djoko at Wimbledon and he ends up losing it in five. That hurts.

The match now becomes something that will haunt Sinner. Up two sets to none on Djoko at Wimbledon and he ends up losing it in five. That hurts. In the second-to-last game of the 5th set, he completely booted an overhand winner and hit it long. You could see his entire body deflate. He was on his heels right there, but that flub let Novak serve for the match, and Sinner was completely toast in the final game. A missed winner early in the 3rd set was the opening Novak needed (they were talking about it during and after the broadcast) and really marked the beginning of the end. Tough beat.

Ons Jabeur unleashing a bevy of absolutely devastating drop shots as she tries to come back against Bouzkova. Jabaur cruising to win the 2nd set, setting up a deciding third.

Cool! She is the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam semi-final. Come to think of it, she is probably the first Arab player of either sex to get that far in a Major. Possibly also the first African player to do so - although there were some reasonably successful South African players in the past, so I am not sure.

Safrican Johan Kriek won the Australian Open in 1981. That's it. I actually saw a really good Egyptian player playing in Edinburgh in the 70s: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ismail_El_ShafeiNever made a grand slam semi though.

Did you delete your post with a link to a page with statistics on Grand Slam semifinals or is my phone acting up? Anyway, Johan Kriek is listed as an American on that list - I guess he must have switched allegiances, possibly to avoid the anti-apartheid boycott. But in the post-apartheid era, Wayne Ferreira and Kevin Anderson both reached semifinals, twice. There was a male player from Morocco some time ago who had some success - Younes El Aynaoui (sp). I don't think he ever reached a semifinal though.

And it's only includes the Open Era. here it is again anyway for anyone else interested: www.ultimatetennisstatistics.com/record?recordId=GrandSlamSemiFinals
