I chose “Atheist” but could have picked “Other” as well. My upbringing was as a church-goer, in my University days I thought about religious ministry. Marrying and raising children for many, many years we all attended and participated in a church. I sincerely recited the Apostle’s Creed. But deep down, in my academic mind (I had done a lot of reading and a little grad school training in theology), my knowledge of how the gospels came to be written and who the real, earthly Jesus might have been, I knew that Christianity had been made up.

Still, I sometimes describe myself as a Christian but without the supernatural. No God in Heaven with Jesus at his right hand taking a personal interest in me. Yet, it is more than “Jesus was a great teacher of ethics.” To me, although mythical, he is almost like a fictional character who is so well conceived that he seems almost real. That is the Jesus I look up to but not the “personal savior” nor the 21st century extreme right-wing fascist bigot who always voted for the ex-president. I hope I have managed to offend and alienate all other sides to this issue. 

All you have is an English translation of an ancient book. 

We also have the Church Fathers, Doctors, & philosophers of our faith.

All of whom form a circle-jerk of shared delusion, which no one outside of that circle finds convincing. This is in contrast to every other discipline which focuses on verifiable, objective reality--what they reveal is convincing to outsiders, who can at any time look for themselves to verify that what is being discussed is real, and that the conclusions do indeed follow from the evidence.

You could write the same thing about "global warming," and it would still apply.
