Yay or nay?
Yay for me. Way better than that recent tv show that used the title and nothing else.

Steve Martin at his best. Kudos for Rick Moranis, Dianne Wiest and Jason Robards too.

Yay. I haven’t seen it in a million years but I remember that I liked it.

Watched it for the first time last year and it became an instant favourite. It is sort of in the John Hughes mould, except Hughes never wrote anything this good. Excellent performances all around and some great characterizations too. My only complaint would be the overuse of adult humour (the dildo, the blow job in the car) when it is not necessary for the plot. In fact this should have been a drama with a little dash of humour rather than the 60-40 balance we got.

Funny you mention that because this and Fast and Times at Ridgemont High are two movies I always think Hughes made when he actually didn't. The suburban angst in this is pure Hughes.

A yay.
I sometimes imagine the "Why'd you make me play second base" eldest child of Steve Martin's character becoming a Major League Baseball player- at second base

A yay for me. The second attempt at turning the film into television that ran on NBC was pretty good too.

Yay, & I'd argue it's probably a good movie for pre-teens to watch. I liked it more as a kid I think, though still good.

Big big big yay, my mom got me that tape for Valentine's Day one year, it wasn't quite the movie she thought it was going to be but I loved it and watched it to death.
"What channel is this?" "No Gram, it's a tape." "She needs a man, NOW."
Gotta love the grandma.

Love the movie, except for two things:
Steve Martin is supposed to be 35?
The little boy attacks and destroys the school play at the end, and the parents sit there with proud grins on their faces as if it's the cutest thing ever? No.

No. Haha yeah. He was surely the oldest looking 35-year-old I've ever seen. In reality, Martin was 44 at the time.

Even in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels he is supposed to be half of Michael Caine's age but looked the same as him.

Because unlike the teacher, they're all...PARENTS. They're all on the same roller coaster Steve Martin's character is.
It is cute, he thought he was protecting his sister.
