Barry Humphries AO CBE (17 February 1934 â 22 April 2023) was an Australian comedian, a prolific actor, author and satirist. He was best known for writing and playing his stage and television characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. Humphries' characters and his absurdist humour brought him international renown, having appeared in numerous stage productions, films, and television shows over many decades in a distinguished career. Humphries conceived his most famous character Edna Everage as a dowdy Moonee Ponds housewife who caricatured Australian suburban complacency and insularity, Edna evolved over four decades to become a satire of stardom, she/he was a gaudily dressed, acid-tongued, egomaniacal, and a self-proclaimed internationally fĂȘted "Housewife Gigastar". Humphries' had many other personas, all socially satirical characters including Sir Les Patterson. In 1970 Humphries and Edna Everage made her movie debut in John B. Murray's The Naked Bunyip. In 1971 he teamed up with producer Phillip Adams and writer-director Bruce Beresford to create a film version of his character he created for the Barry McKenzie cartoon strip, popular in the British satirical and current affairs news magazine Private Eye.The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972) starred singer Barry Crocker in the title role. Humphries co-wrote the script with Beresford and played three different parts. The film explores the cultural distance between the easy-going Australian popular culture and the stuffy manners and mores of England, both nations are presented crudely in a hyperbolically satirical manner. Barry McKenzie was the first Australian film to surpass one million dollars at the Australian box office, the commercial success did not equate to critical success, director Bruce Beresford felt his artistic reputation suffered greatly from all the negative criticism. Beresford directed the sequel as well Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974). R.I.P ... Barry Humphries with Barry Crocker "Bazza" the archetypal Australian bloke Barry McKenzie.

Harry Belafonte (March 1,1927 â April 25, 2023) Celebrated American singer, actor and social activist known as the King of Calypso has died, he was 96 years old. Belafonte had a significant career as an actor, particularly throughout the 1950's, he considered the actor, singer, and activist Paul Robeson a mentor. Belafonte starred opposite Dorothy Dandridge in the all-black musical Carmen Jones (1954), other notable films of the decade included Bright Road, and Island in the Sun, a film which raised eyebrows with its hint of inter-racial romance. Odds Against Tomorrow was the first film from Belafonteâs own production company Harbel, and was followed with The World, the Flesh, and the Devil... R.I.P ... Harry Belafonte âThe most powerful weapon that we have in the universe is the weapon of art...â Odds Against Tomorrow (1959)

Bill Saluga R.I.P.You can call him Ray, or you can call him J., or you can call him Ray J, or you can call him RJ, or you can call him Junior; but you doesn't hasta call him DEAD I was thinking about this guy just recently, because of the various 90th birthday tributes for Carol Burnett. I had the thought that one thing that made her variety show one of the last and best of that genre in the 1970s was because it was seemingly the only one that didn't have that "Ray" character show up at some point in the show's run. R.I.P., Mr. Saluga.

It is with great personal sadness that I report the passing of screenwriter Bo Goldman on July 25 at the age of 90. Based upon his spec script, Shoot the Moon, Bo was hired by Milos Forman to write the screenplay for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, for which he won his first Oscar. He won his second Oscar for Melvin and Howard. Finally, after winning two Oscars, he was able to get Shoot the Moon done in 1982 (I had the good fortune to read it in 1974). His other credits include The Rose, City Hall and Scent of a Woman, for which he received another Oscar nomination. He retired in the late '90s, but is still revered by many in the business today. I offer heartfelt condolences to his family and thank him for all the help he gave me through the years. Remembered here: The Hollywood ReporterBo Goldman (1932-2023)Rest in peace, dear Bo. You made the world a much better place through your art and your humanity.

Comedian/actor Dick Curtis has died at 95. ObituaryHe was in some sitcoms and a handful of feature films. He's perhaps most familiar from his appearance in the Dick Van Dyke show episode "Coast To Coast Big Mouth", as the Carsonish game show host who tricks Laura Petrie into revealing Alan Brady is bald. This website has a VERY long & detailed interview with him; worth reading for anyone interested in standup comedy history.
