Japan walked it off. What a game! Murakami, NPB's best player, who has been a bum so far, hits a two run double to send Mexico home. That was an entertaining game!
So USA and Japan in the final. Will it be the last WBC game ever? I can't see the MLB owners loving this tournament anymore, especially after the injuries to Diaz and Altuve. They have too much invested in players to lose them in, what to them, is a meaningless tournament. Will they allow another WBC?
He looked bad K 3 times. As the commentator said, he is like the Babe Ruth in Japan and won 2 MVP before 23. He is a time bomb. You kind of get a good feeling for Japan's chance when Ohtani got the first pitch double.
It is too bad that these players get injured. I don't know how the baseball and the owners will handle the situation. Is it worth it to be injured representing your country? Probably depend on how the individual feel.
I don't understand why they play the next day. After an exciting semi-final game, Would it make sense to have a day off before the final? May not be many are following the tournament. I am looking forward to tomorrow's game.

Yeah, I would have thought there would be a day off. Only reason I can see is that they want this wrapped up ASAP as the season starts in 10 days.
Injuries have always been a risk in staging this right before the MLB season starts. But I'll wager Steven Cohen isn't a fan anymore. The guy spends 113 trillion dollars in the offseason and then might see it go all for nothing because his closer is out for the year. Will the other owners think that it could be them next time? And baseball owners historically have been known to kill any idea that might benefit the game big picture wise for their own selfish reasons.

Darvish starting. Not the greatest big game or postseason pitcher, Astros' trashcan Sinatras notwithstanding. Ohtani available to pitch if needed.

You're right about the owners being stupid and woefully short-sighted, but I actually disagree with the idea of Cohen not liking this. Yeah, Diaz got hurt and it sucks. But the truth is that the players LOVE playing in it, the fans love it, and the atmosphere at these games is tremendous. We've been waxing poetic for years about how MLB sucks at marketing its players and has fallen behind the NBA in terms of popularity. The NBA over the past decade plus has succeeded in large part by expanding its appeal overseas and greatly expanding its marketing efforts stateside. This is how the MLB bridges that gap and it will only increase the value of the league, and correspondingly of each team. Cohen is smart enough to realize that, even if the John Fischers and Bob Nuttings of the world don't. Plus, while Diaz got hurt, as did Freeman and Altuve, we can't blame the WBC for that (which I know you aren't, but a lot of tough guys on Twitter are). Brandon Nimmo got hurt sliding into second the other day in a spring game, we're not canceling spring. Sammy Sosa once got hurt sneezing. Mat Latos once got hurt....stifling a sneeze. Shit happens.

For anyone who missed it last night, here is the 9th inning, and it was awesome: That might be the baseball game of the year. It had a bit of everything. Mucho comebacks, Randy Arozarena taking a homer from the Japanese, a 9th inning comeback in a win or go home game.If it had been a real playoff game, it might have entered mythology like the Bobby Thomson game. Game 7 of the 1960 WS, Game 6 of the 1975 WS, Game 6 of the 2011 WS.

Merill Kelly is not someone I would consider a big ace.
Edit: Japan bases loaded, 1 out. Kelly is gone, and Aaron Loup in.

How dramatic! Ohtani struck out Trout to win the WBC for Japan 3-2. USA could not get the big hit when needed.

Japan 3-2 USA. Tight game. Damned if it didn't come down to Ohtani striking out Mike Trout to end it.

Winning the WBC MVP.

Probably this is more important to the Japanese players than the American players. American players, the World Series is more important. You can't get much closer of a tournament than that. The US has a much deeper pool of talent. However, I think Japan matches up very well to the Americans 1 through 9. It would have been awesome if the final could have been a best of three.
