It may be the weakest of the original trilogy, but it still wraps things up nicely overall from the first two movies even if done in a relatively safe manner. Characters like Jabba The Hutt and The Emperor are highlights as are the visual effects (like the Endor bike chase and space battle). The heart of the movie are the scenes between Luke, Vader, and The Emperor. I don't think the Ewoks overall are that bad even though it's silly that the Empire's finest troops can easily be beaten by teddy bears with sticks and rocks. Given the way the subsequent Star Wars movies turned out, you do wonder if maybe things should have really ended right here. At least we certainly got one of the better third movies to come out in Hollywood. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Return of the Jedi (1983) - 3.5 out of 4 stars"Third installment in the STAR WARS saga is a sheer delight, following the destiny of Luke Skywalker as his comrades reunite to combat a powerful Death Star. Some routine performances are compensated for by ingenious new characters and Oscar-winning special effects. More sentimental and episodic than its predecessors, but carried out in the best tradition of Saturday matinee serials, from which it draws its inspiration. Full title on-screen is: STAR WARS EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI. Special edition released in 1997 features enhanced effects and 4m. of additional footage. Followed by two Ewok adventures for TV and the prequel STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE. J-D-C Scope."

That's for the 35th anniversary and not the 40th.

That's the Special Edition. This is the original theatrical release. Not to mention that thread is from 5 years ago... Anyway, for a long time this was my favorite from the original trilogy. I still like it more than ANH, although the flaws people have brought up has taken some of the shine off of the apple. Ewoks taking down the mighty empire, for instance.

I don't think there is anything wrong with doing an updated anniversary thread every five years for example. We don't celebrate the same anniversary number over and over again. Plus, we can compare and contrast our feelings from the past to our feelings today.

The first act is a big weak but it takes off once they get to Endor. I would contend that the final act surpasses that of the final act of A New Hope. The Emperor is a little less interesting than Darth Vader due to the absence of moral ambiguity but it's a very solid conclusion to the trilogy. None of the following movies were of the same standard.

Probably the weakest of the original films, but the space battle off of Endor is amazing. I always liked the idea of the ships going into the Death Star core. Plus the new types of smaller craft like the A wing and B wing are pretty fun. The original presentation is best and the duel between Vader and Luke was very well done. My gripes are the Ewoks trouncing the Stormtroopers and the overlong Jabba sequence. The gross out Jabba throne room and him eating some kind of sea creature interesting predates Temple of Dooms dinner, and I think there was some carry over of ideas there.
