First off, this movie is nearly 30 years old. Holy shit, where does the time go? 10 year old me thought this was the absolute tits. Looking on it with old man eyes, it’s a pretty flawed movie with some good elements; the soundtrack is pretty good. Still, give it a mild yay largely due to nostalgia. Robin is pretty useless here. I guess that’s what you get from a complete lack of superhero training. He just suits up and ready to take on Tommy Lee Jones and James Carrey?

I worshipped Jim Carrey as a kid, so I enjoyed it then, but even he isn't enough to save it now. Tommy Lee is embarrassing himself trying to out camp Jim, Val is flat as a board except for those DSLs, O'Donnell is 48 years too old to be Robin, and with all due respect to CK you can literally see Nicole Kidman completely naked in a dozen movies so no need to sit through two hours of BF to watch her...what, breathe air? "Dr Chase Meridian"...oh dear.

Will need to revisit it but I wasn't a big fan of the drastic change in tone and the performances are hit or miss.

Nay
I am not big on Neon Gotham, Two-Face is goofy and the writing of him is frustrating (the part where he keeps flipping the coin to get the outcome he wants angers me), Kilmer is a bore as Batman and I am mixed on Jim Carrey as the Riddler. While all this might sound like I hate the movie, I don't. It has its moments, but there is just too much about the movie that doesn't work.
I want to comment more on Jim Carrey as the Riddler. All the technical stuff about his character is the most interesting stuff in the movie - his outfits, his lairs, the riddles etc. but what frustrates me about Jim Carrey here is that he goes between just being Jim Carrey and being the Riddler. He is going for the Frank Gorshin thing, but I think he gets too silly with it sometimes. Particularly the parts here he first meets Two-Face and the part where he breaks into the Batcave. His best moments are near the end of the movie where he goes full creepy mode and his final scene in Arkham is great.
One thing that just occurred to me that is often brought up, I am not sure if it is as big an issue as some people make it out to be and that is Dick Grayson living with Bruce Wayne. So here is a question - does the movie ever say he is being adopted by Bruce Wayne, or does Bruce Wayne just letting him live with him for the time being like a friend that he feels sorry for? It has been a while since I have watched the movie.
Rating - 5.5/10

Yay. Not every Batman film need be TDK, just as not every Batman comic need be TDKR. Besides, it's a greatest hits of sorts - Batman is stuck in a vault, buried alive, & we get the Batmobile, Batplane, & Batboat, + Robin & his origin. It could've been very bad. It's not, it's pretty good. Kidman plays it straight, Kilmer plays it straight, Carrey is underrated... it's pretty good.

I don't hate it though and enjoy parts of it. The villains are the most entertaining part of the movie for me. In fact, I think before Batman Begins, the villains were always the most entertaining part of the live action Batman movies.

Nobody is saying that, if they were Batman Returns would not have the popularity is has. Or Batman '89 for that matter. I think many people just prefer Batman to be more dark and serious, whereas Spider-Man and Superman...not so much. I don't think that is the main reason people dislike Batman Forever though.

So the issue for most people I guess is just that they changed Robin from a teenager to a grown man. Understandable. I wasn't sure from memory if it was one of those 90210 type deals where O'Donnell is supposed to be a 16 year old or something. I don't recall the movie ever saying his age, but again, it has been a while.

Bruce offhandedly says he should be in college, and that's the only real clue I can remember.

He is clearly meant to be an adult if Bruce mentions he should be in college. I would have been okay with 16-year old Robin is what I meant when I mentioned the age 16. That he is at least not an adult yet and could be adopted.

Dick doesn't have superhero training, but it I think it sort of hints that he already knows some martial arts at least. The ridiculous laundry scene I always took as implying that. From my memory doesn't Robin pretty much just tell Batman he is going to come with him? Sure it is not well-written, but considering his anger towards Two-Face I can see that reaction. If it was a better written movie Robin would have been the one to take down Two-Face, not Batman's tossing of coins.

Nay. They got Riddler and Two Face all wrong and just turned them both into Joker 2.0 and 3.0. Also this movie should have been Batman And Robin and the 4th movie should have been called Batman 4ever.

Originally, Dick was 8 when he became Robin. This was retconned in the mid 1980s as 12-13. TAS complicates this by having a college-age Robin (although in Robin’s Teckoning it is implied that he put on the cape much younger).
