I don't understand what or why this is. Y'all are trolling at this point. At least, my Knicks is in it. Now I am taking a bit interest. They have not won anything ever since I followed them.

Y'all are trolling at this point. What? I've just had to explain it a bunch here. They randomly put teams in each conference into 3 groups of 5. They played regular season games against the other 4 teams (when they had the crazy court colors). The 3 winners and a wild card in each conference advance to this upcoming knockout round, also considered regular season games. Tiebreakers were record, head-to-head, and point differential. The Final 4 is in Vegas. Only the Finals teams don't play 82 games. The extra game doesn't count as a regular-season game. Oh, and everyone on the winning team gets $500,000 and runner up $250,000.

Y'all are trolling at this point. What? I actually had no idea about this tournament until recently with further explanation from NJtoTX. I have a feeling a big many do not know there is a tournament going on.

After this explanation I still have no idea why this is a thing or how anyone thought it made any sense or was a good idea at any level.

Wasn't the genesis of the idea geared towards disincentivizing guys resting for load management reasons? So you take guys who are making $30m per season and you offer them up a $500k bonus providing they don't sit out, thus they'll want to play that Tuesday game against the Bucks. Something like that?

More towards making something in the regular season less of just a slog to 82 with a joke All-Star game and generate a play-off-like atmosphere for a few games by inserting a soccer-like tourney (The Euro guys are excited by the soccer steal) with elements of March Madness and knowing guys would get their pride up and go for the money, as Shaq says they definitely do. $500k is 1 game pay for a $41 mill guy, $250K is 1 game for $20.5 mill. The non-star players are definitely going for it. They even get $ for each of the Tournament games they've played and for semis. What I don't know is if they also receive a regular season game check for that Final. I'm assuming so.

Maybe. I genuinely don't know. I suppose that resembles something that would make sense.

There will be no March madness atmosphere. For all the (relatively) small money incentives for the players there is the undeniable reality that this doesn't actually mean anything, and fans will be well aware of that.

So how interested will they be for the rest of the regular season, which goes into April? PlayTaps Porzingis and the rest of the Celtics are sure to give 100%. The fact that they had to bribe players into caring about a handful of games says it all about the current state of the league and its players. It's also making a mockery of the game by adding a point differential to the tiebreaker scenario. The Celtics were blowing out the Bulls by 30 points the other night, and were intentionally fouling Drummond to get the ball back after missed FTs so they could run up the score to make sure they made it out of the group stage. Embarrassing for everyone involved.

The league is missing the genuine rivalry. What teams are rivalry nowadays? There was a time I would circle the calendar for the must watch Knicks games, and rush home from work to catch the tip off. There aren't any more.

There aren't any more. The age of player collusion and super teams is to blame. A large reason I'm just not interested in the league anymore. In some ways it's better for the players, but I think it makes the league infinitely less appealing.

I'll follow home town team every week, Raptors, & I'll watch the playoffs when they come. Otherwise, I'm out on the regular season & even podcast coverage. When teams like the KD Suns or LeBron Lakers just want to make the playoffs, & not even strive for top 4 seed, it's dumb. I'm picking the Kings here btw, I think that is a tangible feather in a cap for a franchise that's won nothing (yes?).

There aren't any more. Expansion and the softening of the rules didn't help. In the 80s, The Knicks would gear up to play the Celtics 6 times and it got nastier each time. Now it's 4. Was it when Kevin Garnett & Ray Allen joining Celtics in the late 00s? When players move around, the identity of a team is lost.
