I don't know what the talk was like when The Dark Knight was being casted, but I can imagine Heath Ledger as the Joker may have been questioned.

Not as much as people hating on Daniel Craig announced to play James Bond. When Casino Royale was released, haters enjoyed a tall glass of shut the fuck up juice.

Matthew Lillard as Shaggy
Ian McKellan as Magneto
were two I felt would be terrible casting but turned out memorable.

I thought James Caan was an odd choice for novelist Paul Sheldon in Misery, but it worked out okay.

I don't know, the gay cowboy Joker stuff was quite a shit show. I thought he was miscast myself, just because he seemed too quiet and serious in all of his other roles. Seeing that trailer for the first time is still one of the biggest "holy shit" movie moments of my life. I didn't follow the Bond stuff too closely, I just knew people had a problem with Craig.

Some people made a site called danielcraigisnotbond.com, which still exists. Ledger is probably a better answer to the question though because he's almost universally loved in that role, whereas Craig is pretty well liked, but still definitely has a lot of haters.

Bond doesn't seem like the type of role that could anger people so easily, due to the simple requirements, and that so many actors already had played the role. You'd think as long as they cast a white, english, human male the nerds would be satisfied until at least a trailer was released.
Compared to a role that would require such a huge transformation in voice and appearance like Joker, and when the actor cast was known for more pretty boy type roles (I'm assuming that was one of their complaints, but I don't know)

The biggest complaint I remember was that he was blonde. I'll admit I wasn't crazy about it, but it didn't piss me off...but yeah, there were people who were ready to get the pitchforks and torches out and march on the Eon Productions offices.

Michael Keaton was criticized because he was known as a comedian and people assumed it would be a comedy. But he is also only 1 inch taller than Burt Ward. He does look funny running down an alley in one scene --with the cape flying about.
As for James Bond--he has gotten shorter over time.
Connery was -6'2?
Dalton was shorter than Moore. And Craig is 5'10?
The Incredible Shrinking Bond

The Incredible Shrinking Bond I wasn't expecting Keaton to be convincing as the psycho in Pacific Heights just for the fact that he mostly did comedy back then, but turns out he did an amazing job and was terrifying.
