The card was rounded off on Monday evening by a superb Crystal Palace performance against Manchester United. In a delicious 90 minutes the northerners were hung, drawn and relentlessly quartered in a corner of Croydon which Ten Haag could not wait to get out of. "Where's the coach? Where is the coach?" he was seen to be barking as he tail-spun around the car park like a panicking pigeon. "Stuck in the dug-out clueless for 90 minutes, weren't you?" replied the Palace car-park attendant. But fair play to the traveling United fans who stayed behind (without a choice, of course, until the Palace fans had been cleared) and saw fit to applaud their players wholeheartedly and without a hint of sarcasm while the bedraggled players stood before them like entitled kids after a dismal school sportsday turnout, accepting the applause while not quite knowing why they were getting it. It was a truly abysmal performance all round. Captain Casemiro was particularly useless and it really comes to something when your usual captain, the injured Harry Maguire, would probably have done something like a better job, certainly no worse.
Elsewhere over the weekend, Luton threw away probably their best chance of survival by only drawing at home to Everton; Burnley all but ended their survival dreams; Arsenal and Man City continued winning ways at the top; Forest did their hopes the world of good by seeing off pathetic Sheffield (lack of funds notwithstanding, good riddance to them, you have to say); Chelsea thumped West Ham 5-0 two days before it was officially announced that David Moyes will depart at season end - as if he didn't already know; Euro-wannabes Villa and Tottenham both came up short; and Brentford's Ivan Toney still couldn't find the net in probably the flattest EPL game of 2024 v Fulham.
There are just 23 picks to go, beginning with a full card at the weekend, a trio of midweek games and a final card on the 19th. Creeping up on the outside rail, but still some way behind the group leader, is June who narrows the lead to 9 points with Krippen dropping to third and a clutch of players behind him still doggedly pursuing an outside chance as we approach the final but one furlong.
