But these aren't dramas. They. Are. Action/Adventure. Movies. These movies are in the same vein as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and other pulp movies. They are action-fantasy dramas. The best X-films have more drama than action/comedy tropes. Just look at DOFP or Logan. Call it pretentious or self-important, its more challenging to viewers over the age of 18 who have to keep their attention instead of turning off your brain and laughing non stop through a CGI laden adaptation and not a proper movie. That won't get Xmen to a billion dollars but atleast they dont go for the easy option.

Call it pretentious or self-important, I do, and they are. And yes, you can "turn your brain off" just as much with those films. Especially Logan, since they substituted blood and cursing for most everything else.

And by best elements in the franchise they are talking about good storytelling and dramatic conflict. Now lets see Disney-MCU films from this year: Yep i think anyone with any reasoning can clearly see which films require audiences to turn off their brains and which requires them to think.

Nope. Let's look at the Rotten Tomatoes consensus for DOFP and Logan.[/quote] You mean the ones they got from their boosters? DOFP for bringing the old cast and Singer back and Logan for being Jackman's swan song? And the booster of the old cast coming back to get their silly fairytale ending. Didn't need boosters. BTW, "best elements of the series" is pretty vague and can just as easily be used for that stuff you decry in the MCU movies too. It's deliberately vague so the reviewer wouldn't have to admit "I like it because the first cast came back."

Yeah, because Ryan Reynolds was in charge and not FOX. Now they're paying attention...which doesn't bode well. Nah, FOX just made a great movie. It bodes well.

Logan? That was only received well due to it being Jackman's Swan Song. Nah, it was the real deal. Nope, take away it being Jackman's last performance and take away Logan dying in the end (same with Xavier) and it'd be less well received.
