I love stories of redemption. Nadal. Any others. Montana in the playoffs with the Chiefs? Meh. Gretzky with the L.A. Kings? Meh. Jordan with the Wizards? Meh. Legends yes - but I don't get that feel of - everybody has written you off and you prove the doubters wrong and win it all once again. This Nadal Cat is a Rocky movie in the making....... I used to be an avid viewer of tennis when Sampras/Agassi had wars. No longer. Didn't 'Fed' win another 'Slam' a year or so ago? When everyone wrote him off? Same with Serena? Now Nadal? Great stories

Brett Farve, he came out of retirement and almost took the Vikings to the promised land.

Josh Hamilton and Matt Bush, two catastrophic MLB draft busts who became useful players.

Johnny Unitas - cut by Pittsburgh, working in construction until Baltimore picked him up. Steelers coach said he wasn't "smart enough" to be an NFL QB! Len Dawson - four year with Pittsburgh and Cleveland, 45 attempts. Released by Cleveland, went to the Texas/Chiefs then the HOF

The best I can think of is in Rugby League. Allan Langer left Australia at the end of 1999 to make money in England at the end of his career when most thought he was done. 2 years later he was coaxed back to Australia to play for Queensland in Game 3 of State of Origin. He played a blinder and then returned for the 2002 season and was great, getting picked for Queensland and Australia before retiring for good at the end of the season.

Josh Hamilton and Matt Bush, two catastrophic MLB draft busts who became useful players. Add Tim Beckham to that list. Yeah, Beckham has got his act together. But he was just a bad pick, especially when you thought of the Rays with Buster Posey or Eric Hosmer. Hamilton and Bush were out of baseball. Hamilton was living on the street. Matt Bush was in the pokey. Ron LeFlore is another example

Best example ever is.... Andre Agassi His career was nothing but hair. Commercials for cameras, dating Brooke Shields, and hair. Tennis had nothing to do with this guy, and obviously winning tennis had less to do with him. He was the Anna Kournikouva of men's tennis. Just a HIGHLY paid player who did zilch on the court. But, boy, was he famous. Famous for anything but tennis. Yeah he won a tournament here and there, and somehow reached a number one ranking, but then his game went to shit because all he was concerned about was the glamour, the photos, marrying Brooke Shields, making commercials...I hated him. It got to the point where he was ranked like 200 in the world. Also failed a drug test during his downward spiral. He was written off by everyone. But then something remarkable happened. This guy actually got smart, got tough. Decided to focus on his career, tennis. After falling to a low ranking of 200 in the world, the guy went on to win SEVEN Grand Slams! No athlete has ever had a turnaround like that. None. By the way, the hair wasn't real. This was a wig. He was a douche. I hated him. But then I really loved him. He became one of my favorite athletes. His guts and tenacity, and dedication to hard work really was one of the most remarkable things I have witnessed in sports. And he decided to become a real person. Good for him.

Yeah Agassi is the best example. Others:
Stephen Donald. Anthony Ervin, won Olympic swimming titles 16 years apart. Brad Hogg maybe? Though he was never as highly regarded earlier on.

Not quite on par as others have mentioned, but Ryan Zimmerman is having a crazy season after 4 or 5 straight of being a half version of himself. Hope this back issue passes, always liked the guy.

Josh Hamilton and Matt Bush, two catastrophic MLB draft busts who became useful players. Hamilton is intriguing - i know about his 'demons'. did he ever win anything in the first place? did he fall again and then collect another WS? maybe i'm wrong....just know he went to the Angels and fell hard again....

Good for him. this is an example of ignorantly jumping the gun and posting before declaring one the winner. which i am a fault with. agassi. brings tears to my eyes. i have to pick up his book. have heard horrid stories. turned his life around and married steffi graf - his late years?!? nothing but a gentleman, humble, kind, blowing kisses to the crowd all while at the top of his game. it's on. foreman vs agassi at this point..... (side note - i haven't read the other responses)

For the past two or three years everyone's been saying Nadal is done, he'll never win another major, he should retire, yadda yadda. And then he made the Australian Open final in that throwback championship match with Federer, and now this French Open win. I'm happy to see Nadal winning and competitive again.
