Who's with me. Overrated but Hall of Fame worthy. Everybody gets in. I'm all for Petey getting in the HOF. He deserves it. There's lots of scumbags in the Hall. But who would he be today? Tony Gwynn? Wait - that was 20 years ago. Ichiro Suziko who all of us Yanks complain about just being a gloried singles hitter? He's pretty much the Dr. J of yesterday - yeah Doc was jaw dropping for his day but sadly this is almost a half decade later. Where would Pete fit in today? I say he's a nice utility player off the bench when you need a spark. Thoughts? Discuss

Pete Rose is one of the greatest players to ever play the game, among the top 25 non-pitchers of all time. He may have accumulated some stats towards the end, but I'm assuming you didn't see any of his pre-Phillies career. Today he would be looked at as being on par with Jeter and Boggs. IF more players today had his heart, there'd be a lot more better players.

Only jackasses think of Ichiro as a glorified singles hitter. The guy was one of the best all-around players I've seen play in person. He could do it all. He didn't hit a lot of home runs because he chose not to, he could do more damage by working long at-bats, getting on base and wreaking havoc, and creating opportunities for his teammates.

Ichiro was probably the best hitter of the last 15 years or so; I'm thinking you only dig power hitters which is okay, but not really fair.

I wouldn't call him a "utility player". He didn't bounce from position to position during the course of a single season.
And he isn't missing from the HOF because he was a singles hitter. There are other circumstances.

FYI Rose DID play 635 games at 3B, roughly 18% of his regular season total.

No he didn't show any power while working the hot corner like Schmidt, because he wasn't a power hitter. I know you're just trolling here so I'm not going to respond to this thread anymore, but calling Rose a utility player proves you know less about baseball than I thought.

like what You really don't know why Rose isn't in the Hall of Fame? well - i think it comes down to gambling and politics - i.e. heard stories he bet on baseball when he was managing even though he said he never bet against his team - i.e. he was in position to change an outcome since he was in charge. i think he should get in. but today - he's a 'utility' and 'slap hitter' and 'energy guy' off the bench. we need to recognize our heroes of past - like Dr. J - who is basically Robert Covington today and could dunk - but we all love to relish in the tales of our heros past and make them seem bigger than real life ala jack and the beanstalk. we're in an era where the superior athlete is prevalent - doesn't mean we shouldn't recognize these players from years past..
