We have all seen that question on this forum.
I was on another forum recently when that question. I liked by response so I am sharing it here.
Steppenwolf has a song called Born to be Wild. Part of the lyrics is "Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space" This is allegorical to what happens to the body and mind. When you die, regardless of the cause, your body reacts by trying to prevent it from happening. You muscles may convulse, your breathing may get shallow or deep depending on the cause. Ultimately when you are about to lose the battle your brain starts firing neurons in an attempt to 'reboot'. Basically firing all your guns at once. Much like when you dream when your neurons are firing the subconscious is trying to make sense of the sensory input. You end up getting so called near death experiences if you are brought back. When your body has exhausted its efforts everything shuts down. Again depending on the cause this can be gradual or immediate. That is it. From that point on you are worm food as someone has said. Or!!!!
John 4h Energy can not be created or destroyed. It can only change forms. Since we are basically electro/chemical engines our 'energy' is not gone but only changed forms. There is a small sector of people that think that when we pass and in those moments when all of our neurons are firing we are imparting our information to the quantum world. The thought is that is where you get spirits from. It is the quantum signature of those who have passed before. Some people are more attuned to this quantum world, just happen to be in the right place to where our quantum information is seen. This quantum information is not conscious so you are not seeing ghosts more of an echo of the person from before.

You either live on in another plane, or you get born again in to another person or creature. Or there is nothing.
One of those 3

I've heard about this theory before; but so far, I don't think there's any evidence to support it.

When you're dead, you're dead. You don't "go" anywhere or "live on" afterwards. Your body decomposes, or is preserved artificially, people go to your funeral, and then get on with their lives until they die. There is no evidence of your consciousness continuing to exist after death, nor is there a viable scientific theory that might bolster such claims. The "energy" produced by your brain is electro-chemical in nature, and therefore your consciousness requires electro-chemical receptors (your brain) in order to work. When you are brain dead, your consciousness is dead, even if your body is being kept alive artificially. It's fun to speculate about an "afterlife" because fantasy, science fiction, and religious themed entertainment media. But it's not scientifically feasible or realistic.
By the way, anyone who's ever lost consciousness before (been knocked out or passed out) probably knows what it's like to be dead. You have no conscious awareness, and do not experience the passage of time. And in the case where you pass out gradually (aware of what is going to happen), it feels like you're going to die. Loss of hearing, tunnel vision, numb feeling, darkness, and no memory of what happened when you wake up. Those are the symptoms of your brain shutting down. You're not floating around the clouds, or hovering over your body.

I don't see why you think energy has any more special metaphysical essence than a lump of coal or a piece of meat. Energy is as physical a reality as material. I think that because of the first law of Thermo Dynamics: The first law of thermodynamics, an expression of the principle of conservation of energy, states that energy can be transformed (changed from one form to another), but cannot be created or destroyed. "Is it not just transformed into a form of "wormfood" energy which bears no relationship to the conscious energy of the lifeform which preceded it?" That is essentially what I am saying. That the energy that is you is transformed.

The development of computer memory has raised interesting questions about the way human memory is structured and organized. For example are there file trees in human memory? What is the chemical structure of it, if it is chemical? How are distant memories selected? Will there ever be equipment that can read the memory even better than the person whose memories they are? Will there be equipment that can write to a person's memory in such a way as to make the person believe it is his own memory. Science fiction has explored these questions. Real science has nothing so far.

It's too bad that the feeble minded who answer this question are under the assumption they are intelligent. They haven't a clue, because they live in the confines of socially and academically accepted propaganda and delusion.
First, it's important to understand what "you" are. "You" are the meter reader, not the meter. Until one accepts this frightening thought of total dependence, one can't deal with reality.
If you alter your nervous system or brain, say with lost cells, or the loss of a finger, you have to decide if that is still the same "you". Now, the poster known as "Our Glorious Leader" had the only possible theory for materialism. His (or her) contention was that it was a different entity, not "you", but since you inherited the memory, you thought it was the same "you".
That's the only possible contention for believing in the materialism of the "meter reader".
So, unless there is a higher power which can destroy the meter reader, the meter reader, upon death, is free of bondage. Evidence of this is in the billions of meter readers who have died, and yet none are known to have returned, save the Christ.
Some would surely slip into cracks and return, or try to return, if there was no bondage. Obviously, if there is a choice after death, the choice to return is an insane one into the realm of Satan. If there is no choice after death, then the momentum of the meter reader would logically take it to the course of momentum.
Now, the many control freaks of the world, and if you're honest, you know we're almost all born as control freaks, and hopefully some of us learn not to be, indicate that Jesus was indeed correct in his assessment that is most abundant in his teachings, about controlling oneself instead of trying to control others. The momentum of controlling others will just put the meter reader into a new Hell, or perhaps the same old one.

Energy can not be created or destroyed. It can only change forms. Since we are basically electro/chemical engines our 'energy' is not gone but only changed forms. Yes. And when you die, the chemical energy of your body is consumed by bacteria and such, becoming chemical energy in their bodies. The heat energy in your body dissipates into the surroundings. But the fact that your energy survives your death in no way indicates that you do. It appears that you aren't so much the energy of your body as you are the intricate pattern of that energy and the way it changes over time - much as a computer program is not the hardware of the machine but the current flowing through the circuits, taking different paths according to the rules of the machine and the program. If you turn that computer off and then dismantle it, the energy that was the program does not cease to exist - it dissipates into the environment as heat. But the program itself is lost forever. So it is, apparently, with brains. Our energy is never lost - but we are.

As far as I'm concerned, there are 3 possibilities:
1. Nothingness after death 2. Your consciousness transfers over to a parallel universe (quantum immortality, which is extremely frightening) 3. You are tortured eternally by the malign entity which designed your reality
If there was a designer to this reality, we know it must have had either amoral or malign intentions.

I presume it will be a lot like it was before I was born. I agree. You'll go back to being who you really are instead of this temporary character you're playing. You'll also be graded on your performance, and you won't be able to go back and change any of it.

It would be absurd to be graded on our performance, given that there is absolutely nothing that we could have changed about how we've lived this life, and it is impossible to imagine a reality in which we were able to choose which thoughts to think before thinking them, to choose what our preferences, biases and prejudices were, or to choose how the events that we have experienced would shape our character. God would have to be an insane maniac to judge us based on the immutable attributes with which he imbued us.

First of all notice what a bold and curious statement that is. A good question is how anyone would know such a thing unless some nearly omniscient being claimed it or revealed it.
I myself do not worship Krishna, nor do I consider the Bhagavad Gita an essential text. For me in my religion it is merely supplemental reading. I cannot testify to its veracity.
At the same time though, and this is my point here, I do not claim science has proved it false, nor that my religion has "proved" it false (although that is suggested by some interpretations). Neither has proved it false.
This being the case I find it less than civil to challenge the claims.
My own opinions are just opinions. I do not believe most memories of any specific detail persist after death, but I am not certain what else might remain.

You have no conscious awareness, and do not experience the passage of time. But how can one be conscious of unconsciousness? At the time you are unconscious, you can't be. You are (sometimes) aware of what happened right before you go unconscious (depending on how it happens), and after you wake up. The fact that you have no awareness when you are actually unconscious is proof that you have no awareness when you're dead. When you're dead, your brain is shut down. The only difference between being dead and being unconscious is that one is temporary, and usually only a partial shut down, and the other is a total shut down that is permanent. The immediate effect is the same.
