This is odd because TS3 is the finest of them, & yet it was made out of a short film with messed up villains.

I was 9 when Toy Story came out. Probably the same age as Andy or so.
Then when Toy Story 2 came out, I was 13 (4 years later) and I didn't see it. I thought I was "too old" ... you know that stage in life when you think you're too old to do things you used to like.
So when Toy Story 3 came out, I was 24 years old. I didn't go see it because I was an adult and even though I was getting back into animated films, I was too busy with my College Degree and career.
So in 2013, my son just turned 3 years old. I went back and watched the First "Toy Story" with him. HE LOVED IT. We watched it over and over. So I bought the 3-Pack Blu-Ray because I was tired of seeing the same one over and over.
We watched them in order one day. I nearly cried watching part 3. The ending was so emotional. I kept thinking "It's the best of the trilogy. How can they keep getting better? 2 was better than 1, then 3 was the best."
Now that I have overcame the initial 'emotional' feelings I got from part 3, and rewatched them again recently.
I think "Toy Story 2" is the best overall film out of the trilogy. Don't get me wrong, it's like splitting hairs. They are all solid films. However, "Toy Story 2" has the most character development and growth. It also has a stronger allegory on life.

I thought TS3 was written to be a home release, but they extended it for theatrical. The band of villains seemed rather straight-to-dvd calibre. I couldn't un-think its original premise while watching, most pieces about it leading up mentioned its switch.

I just searched it to verify. The third one was always meant to be a theatrical release. 3 did have two scripts though. The first was about a recalled Buzz.

However, "Toy Story 2" has the most character development and growth. It also has a stronger allegory on life. Using a toy's time with its owner as a metaphor for life and death was quite clever. And using a toy collector's museum display as a metaphor for immortality was brilliant.

I know I'm in the minority but I prefer Toy Story 2 over the others. I almost agree because I think it has the deepest story: Woody's fear of death/temptation of immortality. But there's some little things that bug me, like the toys driving (real) cars. Even as a kid I thought that was just too far fetched and broke the illusion. But it's still a classic. It's good to see it get some praise.

I love all three, but I like the first one a bit more than the sequels.

Will "Toy Story 4" surpass the 3rd?

I'll always love the original, but the third installment easily surpasses the first two films.

I also like how many of the things that the Prospector says foreshadow the events of part 3, like when he asks Woody if Andy will take him to college with him, or when he says that all toys are going to end up in some landfill. Jessie's story and the way it is told via the song "When Somebody loved Me" is really heart-wrenching, and probably my favorite sequence. Yes, I see your point about some of the silliness that you found annoying. But then there's a little bit of that in all three of the movies. My gripe with the first movie is that Buzz also "plays dead" whenever there are humans around even though he doesn't believe that he is a toy.

All three are great. My personal favorite is the third.
Who would've thought that one of the best trilogies of all time would be an animated franchise about toys that were secretly alive?
I miss the old Pixar that just made masterpiece after masterpiece.

It's a hard animal to grab because TS 3 was an emotional punch but the first Toy story is just so gosh darn perfect. I went with 1.

Buzz freezing in the presence of humans was definately a major plot hole. Funny thing is, they could've addressed it as an involuntary "toy instinct" or something like that. But then of course the ending with Sid wouldn't make any sense.
