(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
After taking a day to let Homecoming sink in, I find that it definitely is better than Spiderman 2. If you haven't seen Spidey 2 in awhile, I watched it when I got home, go back and check it out.
1. Peter reads poetry to Mary Jane. There are no moments in Homecoming where you want to punch Peter in the face like there were in Spidey 2. Homecoming has some great nervous tension between Peter and girls, but he actually man's up about it and isn't such a douche. It reminded me of my first time asking out a girl, not knowing what to expect, feeling like you're putting yourself out there, definitely being nervous about it, but also knowing you really want to and doing it instead of being a crybaby. Homecoming Peter is much more likeable in that regard.
2. Homecoming is far more funny, and in a way that works. The teacher who finds Ned in the computer room and he lies by saying "I'm watching porn." the Ferris Bueller reference, "I've got ice cream in here", there were just tons of great moments. Most of the humor in Spidey 2 are things like Aunt May hanging from a building with an umbrella, and two kids saying they didn't believe their mom when she told them eat their vegetables. Just silly stuff, whereas the Homecoming humor is far more natural.
3. The car ride with Vulture. That is the best scene in a Spiderman movie, where you see Vulture actively trying to put the pieces together, and in the end, he gives Peter a strong warning and one last chance. Because he isn't just an evil villain. He is well developed character who has reasons why he's doing what he's doing, and that scene wraps him up as the best Spidey villain so far for my money.

Not to mention that Raimi!Spidey was a freaking college student during Spider-Man 2. He should have been well past the point of that kind of nonsense. 2. Agreed. 3. Well said. No prior Spider-Man was ever this good. They should have hired Keaton years ago to do one of these.

Since I am not a real fan of the Raimi trilogy anyway I of course agree.

Um... a guy trying to be romantic to win over a girl he's already hurt makes him a "douche" that you want to punch?? Wow. That sums up the mindset of your average MCU fan. I'll have to remember not to take ANYTHING you say seriously from now on.

I'm certainly not a child or overgrown child who treats comics (cartoons) like gospel.

I'm certainly not a child or overgrown child who treats comics (cartoons) like gospel. I'm not seeing any qualifications. So you're nothing. Less than nothing.

He was so whiney and wimpy about her the entire time.
Yes, I yelling at the screen to just ask her out already, and he spent more time crying about it instead.

You're being an asshole for calling him whiney, wimpy, for attacking a guy for not being as "cool" as you. You're promoting what feminists consider toxic masculinity. Frankly, I want to know that a superhero with Spider-Man's powers is so thoughtful, sensitive and considerate at heart.

There is nothing thoughtful or sensitive about refraining from asking the girl you like out when she's still single. Idiot.

OK. Cut the damned "Maguire can't act." Crap This is actually where I first noticed him. And Cider House Rules with Michael Caine. Him being cast in Spider-Man seemed a step down for him at the time. It was not the direction his other work was taking. Sorry. Guys into poetry was a thing back then to get girls to like them, even if it was an act. I really don't remember much crying. Really They can't just be different takes on the character? We have to totally destroy the old to love the new? As a Marvel fangirl, I was thrilled Marvel finally made it to the game. We had DECADES of DC. Superman. Batman. It was great we got into the game. He is pretty damned evil. He was playing for keeps from the start. He knows this is a kid, but fuck him-greed takes precedence over the life of a kid that saved your kid's life. His greed is devouring him at the end of this movie. He does something he has been avoiding the entire movie SIMPLY because he wants the product to make more money off. They ALL do. Ronan wanted to exterminate am entire planet over an ancient blood feud. Red Skull wants to rule the world because it is his destiny & his right. This carries on to Hydra. Stane-greed Vanko-avenging his father

weirdraptor, you really do say some stupid shit sometimes. I'm not saying Peter's lack of asking MJ out is what made him sensitive and thoughtful. He was trying to open up to her about his feelings through poetry. He was acknowledging how distant he's been. He thought that's what she wanted. He thought that she wanted to hear some poetry since it worked so well for Doc Ock.

It seems like everyone is tearing into him.
He gave us the Spidey pre MCU. Marvel was in the license out mode like most authors so we got the usual "studio takes license" movie

I dont think you can compare them.
Tobeys Spiderman is in his late teens early 20s. He's got a lot of responsibilities. Caring for his elderly widow aunt. Holding down a part time job to pay the rent of his own crappy apartment. Studying a demanding subject in science/physics at college. Trying to keep things cool with his only real friend in Harry Osborne. All whilst trying to fit in his Spiderman gig. And hes in love with MJ.
Tom Holland is virtually the polar opposite. Hes only 15. His aunt is independent. He has no job. He doesn't need to earn money. He's still studying light school subjects like Spanish. And he has a high school crush. He has no responsibilities (yet). Plus hes being supported by Iron Man and his security at all times. Tobey had no one looking out for him.
So I dont think you can criticise Tobeys character as being depressed or down all the time if you take into account his context. Both are at different stages in life. Spiderman 2 is still the better film because it has more heart and emphasis on a message of duty. And J Jonah Jameson is more funny than everything in Homecoming combined.
