Why can't Robert Downey Jr. continue playing Tony Stark/Iron Man into his 60s?

He should be the "grand old man" of the MCU and take over for Fury.

I always find it amusing when people think these guys have to quit. There is absolutely no reason RDJ has to leave.

Tony really just needs to fit into the suit. His brain is what matters.
But that's also the problem-as brilliant as Tony is, he's also really messed up. It freaks him out that there is life out there in the universe. It freaks him out people he interacts with, that he feels are friends might die. He overthinks some things such as saving people while being totally oblivious to other things.
Such as how he destroyed Toomes. Just the whole move in/take over with no thought to the contractors he was usurping. Like Ultron-protect the world by bubble wrapping it wit no thought to it not working properly

Vulture is not a major character in the MCU. That's why.

I have no idea why anybody thinks he has to or wants to retire from the role. He can take a few years off if he wants always show up any time.

it's a wise artistic decision, coming a tad late. Hardly any serious character actor in RDJ league wants to be typecast and limited to one (cartoon) character.
The law of diminishing returns: his IM-performance was fine, but with each installment it got more tired and foreseeable, now with SMH seemingly not even significantly boosting the re-reboot. Kind of like Jonny Depp before he sold out to Disney' Pirates ride (which seems to be his artistic undoing).
RDJ was one of the most talented, versatile character actors with Chaplin, KKBB or Zodiak etc under his belt when he came in. He is still great after, but let's see how he fares in the future as an actor.

RDJ's career is fine, he can take on any other roll he wants, and why the hell would he view being associated as playing Iron Man as a bad thing?
None of those points meant much of anything. There has definitely not been a diminishing return as his character has only grown, and he can keep playing it as long as he wants.

Billy Bob Thorton remarked a few years ago that when he went on hiatus and came back the only jobs he was offered were like the wise uncle janitor mentor to the talking eagle with super powers...
RDJ and others would have a hard time finding non tentpole films like he used to get anyway.
Mid budget films have been defunded. Everyone knows it is messed up but people are too afraid to make waves since they may lose whatever crumbs they currently get. The only hope I see is Trump creates small business opportunities for media and filmmaking can benefit.
The Wall Street ideology crowd needs to be bypassed. They have completely ruined movies as a business and art form.
They have to lose their monopoly so others can come in and re-energize the business.

Well, to be fair RDJ was having trouble getting the REALLY good roles he used to because of his personal problems. He cleaned up, but the damage was done. I mean, he was never hard up for work because he always was a consummate professional on any lesser work he got during the tougher years, but you get what I mean.

Yeah I get what you mean but are the roles really that good anymore? Drugs or not, the variety of films made have become sucky and the only thing propping them up is media hype (just like they do with washed up career politicians).

I dunno, the Sherlock Holmes movies are good. Those are franchise brand name tentpole films. I thought we were talking about one shot dramas etc. Zodiac etc. I guess he cant really go back to that at his age anyway. He would become the "older mentor" or character actor at this stage.

He tried that with "The Judge", he just seems happier doing his franchise stuff.
