...specifically as being "propaganda". I guess either Luc Besson didn't watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier or missed the point entirely. TEXT: “What bothers me most is it’s always here to show the supremacy of America and how they are great. I mean, which country in the world would have the guts to call a film Captain Brazil or Captain France? I mean, no one! We would be like so ashamed and say, ‘No, no, come on, we can’t do that.’ They can. They can call it Captain America and everybody think it’s normal. I’m not here for propaganda, I’m here to tell a story.” One wonders if some of Besson’s criticism amounts to little more than sour grapes. His most recent film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, utterly bombed at the box office in the United States, with a current worldwide total of only $89 million on a $177 million budget. Critics also mostly disliked it, which stands in start contrast to last year’s Captain America: Civil War – a movie where Captain America goes against the desires of the US government – which was a critical darling and hauled in over $1 billion worldwide, $745 million of which came from outside the U.S. Clearly they didn’t mind the “propaganda.” Another part of Besson’s point that doesn’t entirely make sense is his complaint specifically about America calling a film franchise Captain America. Considering that Cap has existed on the comics page for many decades longer than he has as a film star, what was Besson expecting Marvel to do, rename him for movie purposes? screenrant.com/luc-besson-calls-captain-america-propaganda/

He apparently has never heard of Captain Britain or Captain Canuck. Egh, I think he's still butt hurt no one wanted to see his movie Valerian and the City of 1000 Planets. I mean, who will trust him with $200 million again after that bombed?

Well, there's another filmmaker I'll be adding to my "Never watch their films" list.

He's yet to make a good movie north of the 20th century, so he's probably just bitter.
Has he even watched the movies, though? They explain why he has the name he does.
All that said, I can't believe this hasn't been brought up before. People will find anything to complain about nowadays.

I'm curious as to what he means by "propaganda"? The basic message behind each of the CA films has been: be a good person no matter how hard it is.

Eh.
He's already stated he's not a superhero fan, and he's probably upset that Valerian did poorly.

he clearly has not seen the movies and uses them as a straw man; these films were radically watered down politically so to ensure international marketability. In some markets the title does not even say Cap America.
If Besson wants to criticize this is the wrong approach. In the end these are movies with laser battles in WWII, "Hail Hydra" screaming baddies and superheroes clobbering because of mommy issues in life-and-death situations. Not to forget the titular hero becoming a sidelined supporting character in his final movie.
That is bad enough, but you would actually have to watch to see.

So like Indiana Jones if the bad guys ever weaponized any of the mystical stuff they found, cool.

Notice that you always have to invent pieces and elements to movies to bring them down to MCU level? Like this absurd notion of Lazergun-Indy or when you claimed WW's boyfriend will return from the dead like in MCU formula flicks?
This alone should tell you something about their comparative writing qualities...

No, I just point out the stuff in those movies that were always there. Like the Nazis trying to weaponize mystical artifacts they were looking for in Indiana Jones. And DC WILL bring back Steve Trevor. As for the MCU formula, their only formula is success.

Remember John McTiernan saying the same thing some while ago?

And DC WILL bring back Steve Trevor. nah, you are straw man-ing and misrepresenting without any nuance. Showing full-fledged laser gun battles in a film with a serious/realistic tone like Cap1 is one thing.
"An army which carries the Ark before it is invincible." Giving the Nazi baddies some motivational background in the dialogue (!) is another thing. And it would not be an idiotic laser battle in the time of holocaust and shoa, it just would be like carrying the Holy Lance - as happened in the middle age battles to ensure victory. That was exactly the Nazi thing who were obsessed with middle age artefacts...
Lets not even discuss the great Good-Guy-becomes-Good-Guy-BEEFCAKE!!!-arc, or the Hail-Hydra embarrassment or Red Skull guy or the cute shoot-in-leg "humor"...still, admittedly, Cap1 was a masterpiece compared to the raccoon turd movies...nuance, samy, all a matter of nuance...

Cause he looks like a child, criticizing a success after having a flop.

Cap isn't a realistic film, never tried to be or said that it was. Doesn't mean it can't be serious. They gave the Red Skull motivational background, when Erskine talked about powers left behind by Gods on Earth. And we knew from Thor that he was right. And yes, if the Nazis gained the Ark and used it to shoot out power of God and stuff, it would be the same as laser battling. As for Rocket Raccoon, you have to get over your shame of actual comic book stuff instead of that bankrupt "grounded" approach that nearly ruined comics. DC bringing back Trevor? I just have to look at their track record.

So Captain America is being propaganda simply because he has "America" in his name?

So, they are like comic books. Wow, that's interesting. speak for yourself, I find bad writing neither interesting nor do I see merit in obtuse generalizations. Wow, interestingly Cap 2 was better written. And wow, WW tackled a similar war premise in a satisfying way, showing the horrors of war in not trivialized, tasteless or dumbed down way. But one man's trash is another one's treasure. Everybody likes the entertainment he deserves.
