I have never been so satisfied to see a studio go completely insane and just give up on trying to course correct. I'm just remembering all the asshole back on the original IDMb who must be absolutely LOSING THEIR SHIT right now! I feel kind of sorry for Dennis, though, right now. For all his prancing and preening around the MCU board being a troll, his own cinematic universe of choice has just collapsed in on itself.

It makes perfect sense the Bat Universe is going to be separate from the DCEU just with the sheer size of it. Which is how Shared Universes work in the first place. Exactly, it's 6 degrees of separation with one character associated with Batman having a place on those other teams. If you want to be like that then Superman would also be part of the Bat-Family because Bruce Wayne once own the Daily Planet. It's more appropriate to say that Batman has tangential connections to a lot of DC, not direct influence. |

All I was saying is if they follow through with that, it's the most disorganized ridiculous thing I've ever heard of in this industry.
To anybody who wants to say "making it independent allows them more creativity". If as a professional filmmaker you aren't good enough to make a poignant film within an existing narrative structure, then you simply aren't that good. There is an entire subset of architects who's practice is dedicated to doing massive creative overhauls to existing structures, and fitting highly conceptual projects within or in conjunction with landscapes and older building elements. To suggest that doing something independently is the only way to make a meaningful project, is frankly ignorant of the design process.

No it's just a crude interpretation of what M Reeves (one of teh best directors of his generation) said a month ago in a podcast. It could mean (i) standalone story within DCEU without any othe DCEU character or (ii) new Batverse within the DC Multiverse with the Bat family as focus.
I would prefer the latter approach, as it would give oportunity to have a completely different take on tone, world, and characters. Don't forget how variable the DC characters are : TDK Bats, Goofy Bats, Miller-killer Bats, Cartoon Bats, lego Bats etc. It would be a pity just to have one interpretation for the next decade or so.
The DCEU should not swallow up everything that DC produces cinematically, DC are simply to big and varied for that. The monoverse approach is perfectly fine for MCU characters though.

Sounded pretty specific. It doesn't sound like a crude interpretation, but I suppose it could mean set in the DCEU with no real crossover.
BTW though setting it in the "multiverse" is just another way of saying it's not connected at all. The whole "multiverse" thing is just an excuse to be lazy and not maintain continuity. I view that as nothing more than a lazy approach with lip service to a "multiverse" to make people give it credit for being creative when it's the exact opposite.
By saying DC is too big and varied, what you mean is they are disorganized and unfocused, and again they use words like "multiverse" as an excuse for being so.

Yes, you can have those types of movies and they are clearly not in the DCEU, but... If you are using Affleck's Batman (the one in the DCEU, even if it's not Affleck playing the role anymore) you'd have to make them in the DCEU. If someone makes a random live-action Batman movie and you can see that it is not the same Batman as the one Affleck is portraying, that's a different story. They can make all the "Elseworlds" movies they want. But at the same time, they better make sure that they let people know those movies are not connected to the DCEU. People will get confused and hate the movie even if it is good. One thing I don't get is that these directors are clearly hired guns. None of them are there just because they want to make a [superhero] movie. Studios have gone to these directors to get them to make said superhero movie. But then they want to bitch and moan about their vision and butting heads with the studio. If these directors really wanted to make their dream superhero movie, you'd hear more about directors wanting to make that Green Lantern movie or that Booster Gold movie or that Legion of Superheroes movie. |
