Like, I mean, there is already enough worthwhile music of the past, that makes today's music useless? Well, I kinda do, and furthermore I'm not really interested in seeking out music of the past that I might not be aware of, I feel like if I should already should have I already would know about it. I'm sure some people here besides me know what I mean?

However, I do know what you mean. There was a study a few years ago that concluded that while most listeners express a preference for new music, they actually listen to their old favorites over and over again. source.wustl.edu/2013/07/we-dont-like-unfamiliar-music-even-though-we-claim-we-do-study-finds/

Yep. It's either fishing for crumbs at this point, or going down dead ends. There's probably good music being made but it's not given the light of day.

There's probably good music being made but it's not given the light of day. There is a lot of good music being made today. But I admit one has to work to find it.

I'm sure some people here besides me know what I mean? I know exactly where you are coming from here. Who I've been listening to this year just blows right past those who are on the radio these days, I love my late beautiful precious Steve Sanders SO much!!! God bless you and his family always!!! You sound as if you have just given up on life and are ready to die.
If you ain't busy living, you're busy dying.
Discovering new music, brand new and old music you've not been exposed to, is living pal.

It depends on the genre really. Myself and my metal friend alpha128 will always find new music we like because metal will always be metal. Sure the styles may change over time, but it's still metal. If you're looking for rock, that can be tough. while there's certainly bands playing rock these days, it's generally not the style of rock I personally would listen to. Other than that, I don't know what else is out there because I don't care. But I don't think it's fair to make a blanket statement of "music today sucks". There was plenty of stuff in the 60's and 70's that people hated and that's the case for every period. You just have to find what you like. In some cases people just opt to listen to stuff from the time period and genre that means the most to them.

Thanks Jayman . I would add that this is a great time to be metal fan because there are more metal bands than ever, from all over the globe. As I've noted earlier in this thread, it can be time consuming to sift through all the options, but I think it's worth it. And I'm grateful to Admin to give us this forum to discuss and share what we've found.

Good for the WSJ to note the metal explosion. I've never been a fan of the genre, but metal continues to surprise me because every weekend my local college radio station KMSA tunein.com/embed/player/s34134/ plays more different kinds of metal than any other station in the U.S. [Wikipedia]. It's an embarrassment of riches to be able to hear music unlike anything I've ever heard before but not know the artist (Shazam can't identify) and it's from casually listening to the radio.

Not all modern music is trash, I feel like it's become the norm to say so. I have the capacity to love music of all genres, both old and new. Discovering a new favorite is orgasmic.
