I get a lot of good deals at a local thrift shop, 25 cents a piece or 10 for $1, paper AND hardback.

Usually a local bookstore, but a lot of times ebay. There used to be a thrift shop that sold a lot of books for next to nothing (literally pennies on the dollar) but it folded up unfortunately. New books I pretty much have to rely on B&N or Amazon because the local bookstores near me only carry used books.

anyone here? I find bargains on recently ebay. I'm a book nut to the point where I had too many of them filling out my library so new ones had to go sideways on top of others. Once I hit that point, I decided to go electronic only from then on. So for the last couple of years all my books that aren't academic by nature are bought via Barnes & Noble's Nook.

I still enjoy wandering around used book stores, even though they are starting to fade away. I'm sure that in 10 to 20 years they'll be completely extinct unfortunately.
If i can't find what I'm looking for in a used store then I resort to buying new books.

Almost always now from Amazon and I don't buy used any more because of an experience with a 'like new' book I bought that had something that looked like blood splattered throughout the book.

as a teacher librarian, any book I want to read I "buy" for the library. Otherwise I borrow from the library. Unfortunately and paradoxically I have a number of gift certificates to a large bookstore chain and I haven't used them.

My town used to have a bookstore, they went out of business after a couple of years, their prices were usually higher but I got a LOT of good deals out of the 25 cent boxes. One time I won a $15 gift certificate and I stretched it out for all its worth.

There are 3 "indie" bookstores in my area, one of which is a combination "new/used." I also pass by a Goodwill, and a Salvation Army store with some frequency ... and usually stop to look at books in those stores. Weekend garage sales can be a great source for $.25 paperbacks, and $1.00 hardbacks.
There are also 2 "sidewalk libraries," within a few blocks. I had never heard of this, until recently. It's, apparently, a world-wide practice. People erect what look like large mailboxes, with glass doors, in front of their homes. Anyone can see what books have been placed in the "library," and take looks interesting. Folks are encouraged to leave books that they've finished. It's amazing how fast the turnover is. I've found a few, and left many.

I used to get them at several local thrift stores like the Salvation Army etc... However, I have so many and they take up so much room I now mainly check them out at my local library. About 80% of the libraries in my state are connected online and any user with a library card can have any book or dvd or cd etc... sent to the library of their choice where they can pick it up and return it.
It's freaking awesome.

B&N, B*A*M, the local bookstore, there's a comic book shop nearby that sells regular books- but only scifi, fantasy, & reference ["The full visual encyclopedia of Batman" or "The Life and career of Tolkien", would be titles you'd expect to see], there is another store the sells secondhand books for 2-10$ a pop, and there's always someone having a yard sale or some charity book sale. Bought a whole box of books at a charity sale once, cause I wanted the mystery novel and the one history book I could see at the top of the box. Turned out to have a nice copy of JANE EYRE and an older printing of LORD OF THE RINGS with a nicer intro into the FELLOWSHIP from some dude who'd studied under Tolkien. You find some cool stuff at places like that. My sister once took me to a Church that had glass and books in the whole basement, and my sister claimed it was like taking Indy Jones into the warehouse they stashed the Ark into, cause I was all over the place discovering new things.

I've heard about those, I wish they had one here, but I'm sure some idiot would just steal them all or dismantle it.
