This is 'Sports Entertainment'. And Hart - as 'vanilla' as may some think he is - is one of the most entertaining sports entertainers out there even to this day. Entertaining beyond belief in a trainwreck sort of way. I've always stated WWE Network should put on a half hour show with Bret performing basic daily mundane tasks in life which would be a hit. For instance: Bret Puts His Socks On In The Morning: Bret pats himself on the back and marks out for himself for putting a pair of socks on - only to discover a hole in the right big toe of the sock. Long dramatic pause. Bret stares out a window looking at a desolate Canadian cold winter field with dramatic music playing in the background - 'Why do these things always happen to me?' Bret victimly moans. Bret Opens Up a Bag of Potato Chips: The Best There Ever Was, Is and Always Will Be opens up a bag of chips only to discover the bag is half empty. Bret victimly throws the bag against the floor - long dramatic pause with dramatic instrumental music playing in the background - 'They've screwed me again!' Bret professes! Ratings winner. I'd purchase 'The Network' just for this. lmao, this is awesome, yea Bret is always the "victim." First why did they even put the title on the man, I'd never had him go over Taker at Summerslam. Next, bro, youre signing a massive contract with WcW, his idea was fn stupid. Just "hand" the title to Vince and Bret gives a farewell speech, how mentally retarded is that.
Drop the belt to Shawn, it isnt "real" Bret. Im sorry, Id done the same thing as Vince, difference is, I'd never given him the fn title.

I get that Bret more than paid his dues and was a company man for a decade-plus. I get that Bret cared deeply about his career, the wrestling business, and the WWF/E. I get that Bret absolutely DESPISED Shawn Michaels and felt he was an unprofessional asshat. (And, I mean, Shawn was.) I get that Bret had a "control clause" in his contract that afforded him the squishy, subjective benefit of "reasonable creative control." I get that Bret considered himself a national hero in Canada and was loathe to drop the title to anybody, much less Shawn, on Canadian soil. But at the end of the day: it's a professional wrestling television show, and it's Vince's ring/rented arena/sandbox, and no matter what Bret should've gone out there, "done business," and laid down for Shawn. Or Taker. Or Vader. Or Barry Horowitz -- or whoever Vince told him to go out, wrestle, and lose to for the belt. What other realistic option did Vince have? |

I think the famous 'Montreal Screwjob' was one big giant work to benefit all parties - all set up for an eventual return by Hart one day - which he did - too bad his health/life problems got in the way of it being a success |

Also....all the people involved...Shawn, Hunter, Bret, Vince, Earl, and a few key people backstage, not once has spoken out yet? A famous quote from Ben Franklin: "Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead. " We arent talking just three people. Why keep it a secret this long, someone would have spoke up surely by now. Now the documentary thing...."man that sure...convenient" but again, Bret wasnt a normal guy. The man popped for himself, lets be real. This was a huge huge moment for Bret. His final match in the WWE(F) he thought he was gonna relinquish the title on raw the next night. It doesnt seem odd for someone to document that occasion (Especially Bret and his ego). The people filming just entered gold. Also Vince said from the get go WcW wouldnt use Bret properly and boy was he right. Ill still say it's an interesting theory non-the-less. (Being a work) |

(Being a work) These are all 'Carny Workers' and lifers. It's a fake 'sport'. 'Sports Entertainment' now. What would be to gain by coming out and admitting it was a work? They'd never be employed in any capacity again. There would also be a tremendous backlash. It was the greatest 'work' in wrestling history. What happened was 'Life'. The deaths in Hart's life (Owen), his career ending injury (concussion), his stroke(s) - none of this was planned for. What was planned for was an eventual return years down the line - and Surprise! It came to fruition! But with Hart a shell of himself due to 'Life'. You can't plan 'Life'. (And WCW did everything for Bret - put him over their legend Flair - their Icon Sting - they're new up and comer who is being pushed today by WWE Goldberg - gave him every strap under the sun - made him a recruiter for the nWo - leader of nWo 2000 - gave him the belt in Canada - Bret couldn't get over because of 'Bret'. It took the wwf a lot of years to really get Brett over. That didn't happen over night. I'm not a huge fan of Brett. He had good matches. That said, I tend to put more blame on wcw for him not really getting over there than you guys do. He came in a big star. As has been said by many, The WWF created their own stars. WCW couldn't keep people over who were already stars. Whether or not it was a work, At the time I didn't think it was, then I did. But regardless, you have to drop a title before leaving. I've never heard of anybody not doing it.

Part of me wants to believe that it was all a work but at the same time I don't think Vince would of been clever enough to have pulled it off. Also Bret is just too bitter about it for me to believe that it was a work. Or hell, maybe it was and in Bret's mind considering he found all of it to be so real ended up believing in it himself.

(Being a work) Exactly. It wasn't a work. We'd already seen that Vince was willing to screw over a champion at Wrestlemania. No reason he wouldn't do it at Survivor Series. The only people who say it was a work are people who had nothing to do with it. |

Takes things and himself 'Waaaayyyyyy' too seriously. As numerous of his own colleagues have pointed out - he's his own biggest mark. This is a great clip on Youtube entitled, 'Burial of the Hitman - exposing the real Bret Hart' - basically shows you what numerous colleagues of his think of him. A selfish mark that takes himself too seriously: Hart's Colleagues Bury HimI'm sure all 3 of Trips, Michaels and Hart do care to this day about the 'work' even if Michaels and Hart's glory days are behind them. This is their life. Nothing would be to gain to come all these years later and state it was a work. And I'm sure they'd like to maintain 'true' to the sport they love. Carny workers. |

On a random note, that burial of Bret video, seen it. Here is the thing, I cant stand Bret Hart, never liked him, never was a fan. Im not denying, he was a fantastic worker, it just wasnt for me.

Im glad to see others, here is how I went, please cut me a little slack on the first 2. I was a child, I didnt know better!
Hulk Hogan (Like the Cena of today, you cant blame the little kids, I was a little kid and it was Hulk freaking Hogan. Looking back now....you cant deny his impact on the sport. I mean his ego was out of control.)
Ultimate Warrior - I was still a kid, but man, his promos are stuff of legends. I still dont know wtf he was talking about.
Now I got older...
Mr Perfect - When Macho, 92 Series I think, Warrior left (again) and Macho needed a replacement. To this day I say he should have won the Rumble of 93.
Shawn Michaels - The entire package, had it all. Promos were great, just awesome. His WM12 match was it for me, I wanted him to beat Bret so badly, I never liked Bret. Hell I wanted Owen to win at Summerslam in that cage match.
WM 14 Shawn left, and I wont lie, I quit for a bit. I would watch off and on and watched WcW and WWF. I saw this guy...nothing big, mid card at best....his name was Chris Jericho. His 1001 holds (Armbar anyone?) just gold.
So I watched Raw off and on too. I saw the Rock doing a promo and I was curious who Y2J was. I was hoping it was Jericho, WcW never used the man properly. When his name came out on the titantron, I still say that's one of the biggest pops I've ever heard for a fn heel. It isnt just that, the dude...does he get hurt? He is a fn ironman. I cant recall one time he was legit hurt, he left to pursue other goals, but I just cant recall him being hurt.
Shawn came back...now the question is...WMXIX who was it? Did I want Jericho or Shawn to win.
Jericho I always felt the WWE could have done so much more with him.
Ok with that OT stuff, IDK Bret thing...it wasnt for me. "Best there is...best there was...best there ever will be." He just bored me. I thought he was a sub par promo, but I wont lie, he was one hell of a worker. His style just didnt fit "me."

I've always found it curious when people talk about Bret not being a good promo. Especially considering his Pro-Canada/Anti-USA promos were some of the best stuff going on on Monday Night Raw at the time. There was always the right amount of conviction in what Bret had to say.

His promos to me were so vanilla, so by the book. Go watch a Jake promo, Jericho promo, the Rock, or HBK, and a Bret.
Yea, I have sleep issues, major sleep issues, and Brets promos make ME sleepy.
