B+ an upgrade from TFA. I must say, the hyperspace kamikaze collision was fcukin' amazing. I can't remember the last omg special effect visual like that... nailing the silence, the wide shot, the explosion... good gawd it was awesome. I was way off. Time has murdered this movie for me. Worse than The Godfather Part III.

9/10, together with Empire and to a lesser extent Revenge of the Sith the 3 Star Wars movies with the most thematic weight. I know that isn't the reason why everyone watches SW movies, but it is one of the main reasons for me and it makes TLJ even more rewarding upon subsequent rewatches. Tbh I still don't really see why this movie specifically is so much more controversial than all other Disney SW movies, but at this stage it has been discussed to such great lengths that I feel we should just let it be and let people like or dislike it without making it some kind of political level argument every time. Mark Hamill's performance is incredible and even though I like his arc in Empire a bit more, this is probably my favorite performance by him in the franchise. The way his story ends is just beautiful, I almost teared up again when I saw it. I understand that many people watch SW for the badass samurai-like sword fight scenes (and I like those a lot as well), but I just adore how much this movie taps into the philosophy of the whole thing. Luke's story especially where, at the very end, he truly seems to be in touch with the ideals and concepts of the jedi philosophy of harmony, sacrifice and victory by defense instead of offense. It builds upon the story George told in the prequels were the jedi were arrogant and militarized, no longer standing for the message and purpose that they once had.
