The Shell Game
A newspaper salesman and avid street gambler (Donal Logue) is summoned to a limousine one morning. In it he finds Mr. Baron (John Goodman) and a rudimentary shell game. Not playing for cash, Baron says 'to win is to have everything you've ever wanted...to lose is to have someone you love die." Logue struggles with his willingness to play the game against trying to decipher the connection to his family and friends. How hard will he gamble? How high will the stakes be?

Jill's Not At Home.
Whilst Jill is working at a Burger Bar, a botched robbery results in a catastrophic mix-up of circumstances involving various items going missing or astray from the various folk who were robbed in the eatery during the attempted blag. Blackmail letters, a formula for instant tooth whitening, a vintage inscribed Rolex watch, baby Timmy's giant frog, jewels, 12 bags of dope and 3 x Filet meals with an extra Filet.
The black bin liner that Jill was taking out the back after a loo break is wanted by a plethora of villains, cops, irate parents and a tourette's suffering, diabetic with post war syndrome.
A few visits to Jill's apartment ruin a potential night in with Jill's new beau.
Up next.

POLICE in a MOSCOW BAR

Police in a Moscow Bardirected by Roger Donaldson written by David Mamet and Christopher McQuarrie Alexei (Kenneth Branagh) is a Russian policeman and former KGB agent who still imagines himself back in the Soviet era. Each night, even in the dead of a Russian winter, he drowns his troubles in liquor at a seedy Moscow bar. As he proceeds to describe his memories to the bartender (Gene Hackman), however, another policeman, Vitaly (Kevin Costner), claims that Alexei is lying through his teeth and has made up everything. He claims that Alexei is in fact a mole for current Russian president Vladimir Putin, there to report back to the Kremlin on the loyalty of the Moscow Police. Alexei reacts wildly and pulls a gun, making the excellent point that, even if he were a mole, Vitaly has just doomed the police by saying what he knew. Laughing, Vitaly begins to explain what he remembers about his time in the KGB—leading up to how he says he knows about Alexei. Each of his memories is contradicted by Alexei’s, until—who is telling the truth, and who is lying? Is there a mole at all? And, if so… Who? Next: Each Purple CurtainIt’s a Poe reference—third verse of “The Raven.”

I was trying to remember another movie that was an American/Russian tight thriller that was made some decades ago , and your synopsis gave me the impetus to look for it , Gorky Park (1983) . I have enjoyed the older style spy thrillers like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley's People (1982) . Tinker Tailor was remade in (2011) with great care and is worth watching too . Recent favorite for me has been Foyle's War (2002-2015) but is mainly set in WWII (first 6 seasons) , with the last 3 seasons in the early Cold War period . The Series is unfinished .
More recently , Bridge of Spies (2015) is a good Cold War thriller too .
I had intended Police in a Moscow Bar to be more modern with many old school elements .

This thread rules! Great stretch for the old brain muscles.
Each Purple Curtain
In Philadelphia, the city is alarmed by a string of murders reminiscent to the "Stations of the Cross" (a Catholic-inspired segmented depiction of the crucifixtion of Jesus Christ often accompanied by paintings and prayers...kind of like movements in a symphony). A kind of sleazy detective (Denis Leary*) investigates these murders and bends the rules to get the information he wants. At his weekly confession, the detective confides with his church's bishop (Danny DeVito) and after a while begins to suspect the bishop may be linked to the murders. The particular victims suggest a theme of vengeance related to the bishop; these were people he would want dead. Going by "The Stations of the Cross," it is likely there will be more murders as the cycle is completed. How many rules will a detective break to investigate a seemingly peaceful man of the cloth? Is the bishop a fanatic killer, or is the detective a washed out bum?
*Maybe it's just me, but I think Denis Leary could really go the distance in a dramatic role. He was excellent in "Rescue Me." I wish we saw more of him in that capacity. Plus I think he and Danny DeVito would have a perfect back-and-forth...particularly if something like church confession was part of the bit.

vegalyraThankee kindly, m’friend. I had tons of fun plotting it (though now I see I’ve neglected to put in a role for Daniel Craig, who would seem to fit this plot like a glove). At this point I’d love to see so many of these actually filmed. Who knows someone in Hollywood? And they’re just doing unoriginal remakes when we’ve got all these original plots here… kingkoopa Speaking of that second-to-last one, I loved your concept for Each Purple Curtain—not at all what I was thinking, which makes all the more intriguing for me. The idea (in fiction, of course!) of basing serial murders on the Signs of the Cross is ingenious, and I like how it’s not the penitent but the confessor who is suspected of the crimes. I’m willing to help on the script if Hollywood buys the concept.

Holy crap that's really good! It's sad that people on a message board can produce more interesting plots than the board room full of retards getting paid millions.

I had an idea I think would be good for Michael Rooker-it's about three bums who discover a doorway to another dimension that only stays open for a brief time. A Twilight Zone sort of thing. He'd be the main bum. haha
