It feels like it isn't, like it's extraneous, although it doesn't matter to me one way or the other.
I do wonder if it exists solely to set up the last shot of the movie.

I think it solely exists to set up Johnsons new trilogy and to give Fin something to do. The plot (including the escape and infiltration) is entirely redundant and in the end pointless.

Absolutely not. I'd argue the entire Poe Dameron plot line was also unnecessary. The only parts that moved the story forward and had relevant characterization were the Luke-Rey-Kylo-Snoke parts.

It all depends if the story builds on the revelation that there is a group of people that sit back and profit from this whole saga. If not, it's just another dead end.

I suppose it was useful for the final scene when the children reenact Luke's stand-off against the First Order. One of them, Temiri Blagg, was Force-sensitive so perhaps, those children will be the next generation of Jedi.

rich people are evil. be kind to animals I thought the message was even dumber than that: Rich people are arms dealers and war profiteers. Plus: You are doing good to domesticated race animals when you release them into the wilderness where they will become prey/get run over at best or slowly starve at worst.

It was very necessary. It distracted (some of) the audience from the fact that there is in fact no plot to this movie. It's a ridiculous slow speed chase in space, you may as well throw in a side mission to Space Monte Carlo that ultimately leads nowhere. It's garbage from top to bottom.

I understand what you mean about the animals and the wild, that message has been given in film after film over the years with dogs running out of shelters, being released by "hero dog", etc. The rich people though... I think you need to draw up a Venn diagram on that one, that's not the message.

The rich people though... I think you need to draw up a Venn diagram on that one, that's not the message. Well, last Venn diagram I did was as college student, my logical deduction skills and movie recollection may be a bit rusty here. But I remember the Rose character saying things such as "...A nd who do you think these people are? Only one business in the galaxy will get you this rich...War! Selling weapons to the First Order. I want to put my fist through this beautiful city." Thus, indicating that decadent MonteCarlo/Vegas elitist are filthy rich because of war business with whoever (Rebels or FO) - and also enjoy watching animal cruelty for their pleasure. I have no problem with social messages, but with questionable dialogue and world building seemingly written by a kid who thinks he has all the easy answers to complex questions nobody has asked. If you want an entertaining movie on the absurdities and cynicism of weapon trading watch the likes of Lord of War or better some well researched documentaries.

I see no story of all prosperity leading to decadence here though. I see a story of people who are prospering from evil, trying to hide their evil in things they see as beautiful. I don't see the message necessary to the plot though, unless for some reason it comes back up and is shown to be.

It was a weak attempt to cram social commentary into a scene that was already unnecessary. Unless the commentary was the point of the scene, which makes the whole thing even more awkward...
