The Huston/Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon is a remake.
Malick's The Thin Red Line is a remake.

I liked the remake of the Thomas Crowne affair better than the original.

Ben Hur (1959) The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) The Ten Commandments (1956) True Grit (2010) Ocean's Eleven (2001)
I think Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book is superior in many ways than the original 1967 film, but I've seen others disagree.

Thomas Crown. I could not sit through the original. Pierce was fun, sexy and multi dimensional but I could barely stand Rene. (*Gulp*gulp*slurp*belch*)

Not better, but "As good as" category, Let Me In Matt Reeves (2010), really enjoyed it as much as Let the Right One In Tomas Alfredson (2008). Love both.

Not better, but "As good as" category, Let Me In Matt Reeves (2010), really enjoyed it as much as Let the Right One In Tomas Alfredson (2008). Love both. Let The Right One In took me completely by surprise when I first saw it and it will always remain a favourite, but Let Me In did a pretty decent job as well...by no means a bad film. Liked the additional car scene, and a few scenes from the novel that LTROI didn't have (being totally true to the book would have been difficult to film), but was disappointed that they decided not have the same "back story" for Abby as they did in with Eli.

Sabrina, and this is coming from someone who loves Bogie. I just thought Harrison Ford was more believable in the role, as was Greg Kinnear over William Holden. They seemed more comfortable and relaxed to me. Of course Julia Ormond was no Audrey, but I thought she was fine in the role. I just thought the remake had a much more romantic feel to it than the original had.

The trouble with most remakes, is that idiots and demon worshiping control freaks try to "taint" classics like FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX, WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, THE WIZARD OF OZ CHARADE, NIGHTFALL (rewritten into a book, then a movie which was a spoiled brat version of the classic, and one of the worst movies ever called NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN).
There are a few "watered down" remakes like EIGHT BELOW for NANKYOKU MONOGATARI. NANKYOKU is a classic, while the remake is routine ho hum.
Some will stay close to the originals and pay "homage" while offering some variances, and these turn out "okay", but usually not as good as the original, e.g. THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, SAHARA, TRUE GRIT (the only movie that the hack Coen team ever made that wasn't crap, you have to admit) come to mind first.
One might call COME AND SEE a remake of THE NORTHERN STAR, loosely a remake, but THE NORTHERN STAR was actually superior, because it made the point that the actual "freedom fighters" would not be in nearly as much danger as those who stayed in plain sight. Modern movie makers are too cowed of the control freaks to voice that fact. True courage and reality is not acceptable in post 1965 Hollywood.
There is one undeniable exception in DESYAT NEGRITYAT (TEN LITTLE INDIANS) superior to all the previous versions, versions which got worse and worse with every remake, culminating in the worst one with Hugh O'Brien in a role he had to regret if he was sane, until the Russian version put it together nearly perfect.

......that is better than the original ?? SAVE FERRIS Ocean's Eleven - The original cast had tons of style, but the remake is a much better film across the board. Dawn of the Dead - The original had better social commentary, but it keeps flipping between ridiculous and dull.

The Thing (1982) The Fly (1986) The Departed (2006) Casino Royale (2006)Maniac (2013) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) The 2006 version isn't a remake, but more like another adaptation of the same novel.
