I was five years old in 1975, not yet taking in any pop culture influences, and I TOTALLY remember the image of the young woman swimming across the surface, with the huge, grey triangular snout and rows of teeth pointed in a terrifying direction. Even to a young, unassimilated, five year old mind, I knew it wasn't good. The sickly green ocean water definitely added to the overall effect.
The image captures the most elemental of human fears. I might even say the poster is scarier than the movie itself, and I am a huge fan of the movie.

It's not scarier than the movie, but it is one of the most iconic posters, for sure. Today's posters seem to be more about putting the stars up front and center and less on the specifics of the plot.

It's the second book cover. They just reused it for the movie. The original painting was stolen. I think it transcends both the book and movie and serves well as an art piece all its own, on the nature of hidden dangers, vulnerability, as well as the tenuous human relationship with Nature. More iconic than the "Scream" I think.

That Batman one would never be done today. You'd have Keaton and Nicholson front and center. MAYBE Basinger as well.

I don't think I've ever seen that poster before Foreshame! I'm in the UK...I don't think that was the image used on British posters
