What is with this weird phenomenon of some sports fans being happy when rival teams win a title based on "division pride"? We saw it after the Super Bowl with certain Giants fan(s?) talking about how the Eagles "represent the NFC East!" in victory. We can see it in college sports too with fans pumping the tires of their own conference. "Our conference is the greatest!"
That is too weird for me. Rival fans should be the most unhappy about a team winning a title. What the hell does happening to play in the same division as your world-champion rival do for you? Seems to me like trying to leech off of their success in a sad and pathetic way. "You win! And because we play in the same division, this is an indicator that our division, including us, is really great too! Wooo!"
Yeah, like the 2-14 Giants get to bask in the glow of this victory. Give me a break. They should be angrier than anyone! Your rival team wins, you lose bragging rights. They get another title to stack up against you, for all time. Cowboys fans love to mock the Eagles for their 0 SB wins. That's now gone, forever. What does "represent the NFC East!' matter? Your rival team wins, you might offer your grudging congratulations through gritted teeth, if you're a good sport. But being happy based on "division pride"? That's crazy. Would Saints fans have rejoiced if the Falcons won last year? "Now we have the same number of titles! That's fair!" Hell no.
Are Devils fans supposed to be happy when the Rangers win? "Old-school Atlantic division pride! Now-Metropolitan division is where it's at!"
Are Yankees fans supposed to be happy when the Red Sox win? "Don't mess with the AL East!"
Are Arsenal fans supposed to be happy when Chelsea win? "None can beat teams from London!"
Lay it on me, sports fans. How do YOU react when your rival wins?
(incoming shots at the Colts and the AFC South: yes I wouldn't be particularly upset if another AFC South team won, for now. That's just because the AFC South is too new, and the rivalries are artificial. But I still enjoy the Colts leading the pack as the only team of the four with any titles to their name.)

Highly sensible voting thus far.

If my team aren't playing, I always root for the underdog (unless the underdog is Rangers or Chelsea).

Who is your team? Who are their rivals? Would you feel happy if one of those rivals won a competition because you're both from the same league? I say this knowing that you're a soccer guy and that "division pride" here is a little different because "divisions" are somewhat different in soccer.
Look at it this way. I'm an Arsenal guy. If Chelsea play Barcelona in the Champions' League Final I wouldn't dream of cheering for Chelsea just because they're a fellow PL club. I'd hope that Chelsea got obliterated.

It's complicated by being a non-league addict (It's not a game, it's a way of life)😅 Shirehampton FC (local team for local people). Slimbridge AFC (non-league alternative to FGR) Forest Green Rovers (Avid fan until they won promotion to the league last year. Follow from a distance for now). AEK Boco Ladies FC (my nearest 'non-league' ladies club in Bristol). I wish all the teams in our leagues well (Except Salisbury. They're scummers). Clubs help each other out, and fans will go support neighbouring teams if they haven't got a match on themselves on a Saturday. None of my teams really have 'rivals' in the derby sense of the word. Nearest would be FGR and Cheltenham Town. But to be honest it's just Cheltenham fans that have a pathological hatred of FGR for some reason. Oh yeah, not a supporter of any of these higher up teams, but I take an interest in how Bristol City, Bournemouth, and Brighton, are doing every week.

Some people take it a step further and are happy that the team from their league or conference won.

No I don’t have “division pride”. If I like the team that won the title I’m happy for them, has nothing to do with whether they are in the division of the team I pull for. And for example, I’m a Falcons fan, but I hate the Saints, Bucs and Panthers.

In the pros I don't have it at all. In college, it depends on the school, but I'll often root for teams in my conference.

Hey! Show some respect, the Giants were 3-13, don't take one of those wins away.
I don't know who you are talking about, but I am Giants fan who hated both teams and wanted everyone to lose. I found it difficult to choose one or the other. As much as I enjoyed watching the Pats lose, it pained me to watch the Eagles win. I didn't enjoy that part as much as I did enjoy the other side.
But I also don't really know any Giants fans who were happy about it. Anyone I know was also torn and would only have cheered the eagles on because they also hated New England. I have not been hearing this NFC East pride argument from anyone. Now every team in the division has one, and the only way to lord over the Eagles at this point is their the only one in the division to not have multiple super bowl wins. It sucks. I could maybe understand a 'pride' to some degree that historically the NFC East is the best division in the NFL, I suppose.. It already was, but now it's the only to have all four teams win a Super Bowl... but I have not heard this argument from anyone.
I do remember some Yankee fans, my dad being one, saying they were happy that the Red Sox won, after it was over, because they said it was good baseball as a whole. Sort of seemed like a way to mitigate the misery in post mortem to me, but there's a certain logic to that.

I spend all season, every season, hating the Giants, Cowboys, and Redskins. No way I can just turn that off in the playoffs. But, BUT, the only exception is if they played the Patriots. Maybe. I’ll never root for the Redskins under any circumstances EVER.

Nah, they can feel a small amount of pride in having a tougher division, but that's more than offset by evil triumphing.
Eagles had been the only NFC East team without a Super Bowl win. Cowboys have 5, Giants 4, Redskins 3.

I do kind of get it. Akin to a sibling rivalry. Familiarity has a greater chance to breed respect. Bad blood could take it away but still.

Watching the Packers win Super Bowl XLV was so much fun.
The only interest I had in watching Super Bowl XLVII was to see the Niners lose. The fact that they played the Ravens was secondary.

No. Not at all. Tigers, Twins, Royals and Indians can go to hell. Ditto skins, Eagles and Giants.

I'm one of those I'm a NY Giants fan and as much as I dislike the Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins I root for them if they are in the Superbowl but only then. Up until the NFC championship I hope they lose but once they are in the Big Game I support the NFC east, unless its against the Steelers (My fav team in the AFC)

Never in my life have I ever experienced a more meaningless Eagles/Cowboys game than the last week of this season. Cowboys were already knocked out of playoff contention and the Birds wrapped up home field advantage. I can't recall being so disinterested in a game - for your most hated rival in all of my life. That's why I like the see our home teams rivals do well - to break their hearts and crush their spirit in situations like that. Would have been a blast either knocking them off the last game of the year so they miss the playoffs or crushing them in the playoffs. What fun is it when your rival is 2-14? Not much of a rivalry. Same can be said for other sports. Pens, Celts, Mets or Braves come in here as 'The Champs'? - atmosphere is on fire. You're not 'rooting' for them - but it makes the rivalry better and that much more interesting. I'm not the type of guy who enjoys crushing 'The Little Sisters of the Poor'. Let's beat the best - and it makes it that much sweeter when 'the best' is your division rival.

Never, never, never I say.
I don't hate the Yankees, Patriots or any division rival. But if the Yankees lose 100 games for the next 10 years of if the Pats miss the playoff for the rest of my life, I'd shed no tears.
