I do it when I see a good movie in the theater, not so much at home. I remember a comedian wondering why people did that since the people in the movie can’t hear it. Makes me wonder if this guy watches sports on TV and if he cheers when his player or team does something good. After all, they can’t hear you cheering either (although, I will concede, the sporting event is live. Unlike the movie).

If it's a great movie and someone else starts clapping first, then sure I'll join in.
My theater clapped after The Dark Knight Rises, so naturally I joined in. They also started clapping after The Last Jedi, which wasn't my cup of tea, so I didn't join in.

I can't recall if I've ever been in a theater where the audience has clapped at the end. Mind you, most times I've been in the theater is low-demand times because the tickets were cheaper. I've been on a couple of flights where the passengers clapped after we landed, which seemed weird. Although one of them was a pretty turbulent landing at Newark, the pilot really earned his salary on that one.

If it's such a good time at the theater, yeah. At home? No, that's alittle odd.

No.
I don't really see the point unless the people who made the movie are in the room.

Occasionally at the Hawaii International Film Festival. Sometimes the filmmakers or cast are there. Even if not, it shows appreciation for those who organize the festival and choose the films.
tresix, absolutely.

No, & I've never ever witnessed it either.
I've seen/heard clapping at fun high points, not end credits though.

It happens a lot at festivals. If there is a guest (star ,director, etc.) always, but quite often even if no one involved with the film is in attendence. If I enjoyed the film, i'll join in. I started the the applause when I recently saw Sion Sono's Antiporno at a festival.
I can't recall ever seeing it happen at a standard cinema screening and I've certainly never done it at home.

I haven't done that so far. Clapping for a movie at home sounds a bit weird. I haven't ever been to a film festival (I do really want to go to one, maybe this year), but I expect there is a lot of clapping at festivals. Here in the Netherlands people are a bit less eager to applaud something by clapping. For example in other countries people clap when the plane they're in lands, but they never do that here. So I have never been to a movie theater where people have clapped after the movie. However if one day I watch a fantastic movie at the theater and people start clapping, I think I'll join in.

Never. Never been in an audience that did it either (maybe we just dont in Canada). Audiences are very well-behaved.

Seriously? I’m surprised the majority haven’t clapped at a theater. The theater I go to more often than not breaks into applause. Sometimes even during the film (Star Wars the Last Jedi). Usually if it’s a great film I’ll applaud.

I remember at the early release night for Star Wars I The Phantom Menace (midnight showing I believe), there was applause at the beginning when the film started. Things rapidly unraveled and there were looks of disgust and confusion when people were leaving the theater when it ended.
I also remember applause for The Dark Knight at the end of the film.

Do any of you cheer while watching sports on TV? Yes. Depending on the social situation it can either be a one second Yeah or a series of high fives. I’d also say I can cheer or clap when something noteworthy happens in a movie. You know a long awaited revenge finally takes place or something is revealed that bodes well for our heroes. It’s not often but I’m sure I’ve done it. In theatres i only feel it worthy of someone is in attendance that would appreciate it. I’ve been to films where actors in the film have showed up for a q and a beforehand and in those spots I’ll clap along with others.
