Annihilation (2018)
Annihilation is the new fantasy/sci-fi movie by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac, Benedict Wong etc. The IMDb synopsis is: "A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don't apply." The review embargo still holds, but the social media embargo has been lifted and many critics have already said something about it.

A few quotes:
"Make no mistake, Annihilation is a new sci-fi classic. Brilliant, trilling and provocative, it has as much metaphoric depth as it does narrative tension. I'm floored." - The Playlist
"Annihilation is big budget Alex Garland with all the head-spinning intelligence of Ex Machina. It's violent and patient and then suddenly so transfixing you're pinned to your seat." - Indiewire
"Annihilation is the type of sci-fi we always say we want to see. Bold, challenging, singular, visually dazzling. Would not be the least bit surprised to see it hailed as a masterpiece (and it actually might be one)." - Slash Film
"Alex Garland's Annihilation is another example of the kind of brainy sci-fi we don't see enough of. A story that's both beautiful and wickedly disturbing and an ending you will talk about for days. Dug it so much." - Fandango
"Alex Garland's Annihilation is absolutely phenomenal. It's gorgeous and mesmerizing, with brilliant performances from the entire ensemble. It's a remarkable vision and has a sequence so thrilling that I was left literally dizzy. It will be on my top 10 of 2018 without question." - CinemaBlend
"Annihilation is, in wholly inelegant erms, one hell of a mindf*ck. Most of the time, I didn't want it to end; occasionally, I was so unsettled I thought I might keel over. My head is spinning." - Indiewire
The full review embargo doesn't lift until the day before its release, but with early reactions from critics like this I don't see how it could be bad.

I didn't know it was a Netflix film at all. wow it does say it'll be playing in theaters though Its releasing in Netflix in Europe because Paramount thought it was “too intelligent” for audiences. They asked Garland to change the ending and when he refused they made a deal with Netflix because they think no one will go to see this. Hopefully this’ll be a hit and prove Paramount wrong.

Less than one week until it's released. Anyone excited? I sure am. Annihilation and Mute could make this a fantastic month for movies.

Less than 9 hours until the embargo lifts. I should be at home when it lifts so I'll post some review quotes in this thread.

Reviews are pooring in
Very positive
"Ex Machina writer-director Alex Garland’s unnerving sci-fi concoction combines gut-wrenching body horror and trippy science to compelling effect" - 4/5, The Guardian
"With his debut Ex Machina, an extraordinary study of artificial intelligence and human fallacy, Garland showed potential as a true sci-fi visionary and takes his next step with Annihilation. Some moviegoers will dig Annihilation's audacity, others may find it the craziest flick since mother! It's a completely bizarre tale that will leave heads spinning about what exactly just happened but still finds a way to be genuinely satisfying." - 3.5/4, USA Today
"Alex Garland’s bizarre Annihilation abandons modern Hollywood rules." - 3.5/4, The Globe and Mail
"Alex Garland follows up 'Ex Machina' with a visually stunning, imagination-tickling sci-fi thriller in which Natalie Portman investigates an extra-terrestrial threat." - Highly positive, Variety
"The best sci-fi film in years. Alex Garland’s Annihilation is what you’d get if you let Terrence Malick make something like Alien: Covenant but he wasn’t allowed any xenomorphs." - 10/10, Inverse
"An eerie jungle survival saga about the survival of the fittest, Garland's mysterious thriller has a lot on its mind." - A-, Indiewire
"A psychological mystery laced with environmental disaster and alien-scary juju, Alex Garland’s elegantly unsettling Annihilation is here to shake up your night at the movies in the most mind-bendy way possible, but without foregoing the pleasures of an ambitious sci-fi entertainment." - 8.5/10, The Wrap
"Alex Garland and Natalie Portman's Annihilation is a beautifully rendered and challenging piece of kaleidoscopic sci-fi." - 4/5, Den of Geek
"Sometimes we call blockbusters “popcorn movies.” Annihilation suggests the need for a term to describe the opposite sort of film. It demands absolute attention even as it dares you to look away from some of the most nightmarish images to appear on movie screens in years. 2001 was as divisive in its day as Annihilation is sure to be in ours. I can’t say for certain that future generations will someday look back at Annihilation with the same sort of reverence with which we look back at 2001. But it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they did." - 9/10, ScreenCrush
"With Annihilation, Alex Garland's beautiful, frightening follow-up to Ex Machina, he portrays paralyzing sensation with a sense of vivid imagination. A shimmering example of what Hollywood sci-fi can achieve when the aim is high, Annihilation is a gripping, mystifying adventure and proof that a transportive experience is more rewarding than a story with clean-cut resolutions." - Rave review, The Film Stage
"A phenomenal work. And even though it is coming out in the early months of the year, it's a candidate to ultimately be considered one of the best of 2018." - 10/10, CinemaBlend
"Able to generate dread and awe with equal skill, Annihilation is an absorbing amalgam of genres and influences, all coming together to produce a dazzling creation." - 9/10, Screen International
"Annihilation is mesmerizing and its awe-inspiring conclusion will leave your mind blown and splattered against the wall." - A, The Playlist
Positive
"Garland follows up Ex Machina with a return to the sci-fi genre with an exciting, beautiful, and thought-provoking adaptation of Van der Meer’s novel in Annihilation. That said, Annihilation won’t be for everyone." - 3.5/5, ScreenRant
"Alex Garland's film may not consistently work as well as it could, but it's still a daring and well-acted sci-fi tale. This bold, but flawed sci-fi film from the creator of Ex Machina doesn't play it safe." - 7.5/10, IGN
Mixed/negative

Reviews are stellar. One reviewer called it the best sci-fi film in years and another review even compared it to 2001.

The fact that this won't be released in theaters in the majority of the world is probably one of the biggest movie tragedies of the last years.
